Dear forum members,

During the last few months several users had problems logging in and posting to this forum. And, unfortunately, there have been other technical issues as well, which kept me busy for the last week or so, but for which I could not find a fix. The technical issues seem to be complex. In short, the forum software does not seem to be fully compatible with the website software that I use and this was probably one of the reasons why it also did not work as reliable as I hoped it to work. But this is only one of several issues.

I have therefore decided to install a completely new (much more powerful) forum software, which I hope will find the acceptance of the microscopy community.  The forum software is called phpBB and is the most popular forum that can be found on the web.

Try the new forum here: http://www.microbehunter.com/m…..opy-forum/

The new forum offers several significant advantages over the existing one:

a. It allows for a much better administration of uploaded pictures, it also allows for the deleting of files (which is not possible in the current forum)

b. The width is flexible and adjusts to the screen or window size. This way the maximum space can be used.

c. The forum can deal better with a large number of posts and users.

d. The User Control Panel (top right corner, after logging in) offers more options, including basic file management

e. There is now an option of automatic login, which should give you immediate access to the forum

I was not able to import the old accounts into the new forum and therefore anyone who wants to use the new forum must register again.

Step 1: Click the Register Link

Step 2: Agree to the "Terms and Conditions". This is a standard text, which the forum software displays automatically.

Step 3: Fill out the fields. You can, of course, use the same name and password that you use for the old forum. Then type the confirmation code. This is to ensure that you are a real human being and not a computer doing automatic registrations. You must use a real email address, because the confirmation link will be sent to you automatically.

Step 4: You will then get a confirmation email, in which you have to click a link. Then you are free to post.

The images and posts of the existing forum (this one here), will continue to exist, of course! There is very much valuable information from the community which should not get lost! After the transition, I will remove all of the user accounts of the old forum and convert the forum into static HTML. There will be two links from the main website, one for each forum.

<b>Important: if you have any personal messages stored, then these will not be accessible any more! If you want to keep them, then please copy-paste them to a text file. Also if you have a description of yourself, then this one will also get lost. Please copy-paste it over to the new forum.</b>

All the best and happy posting,

Oliver.

Mr Kim:

A few lines on adding images would be helpful. It took this slow learner three attempts to insert an inline image.
The new maximum image width is 1000 pixels and the procedure is quite different.
Drag and drop is no longer an option.
