Hello,
most likely xylem vessels of plants. They are quite common, but not all of them are as regular as the ones in the picture. Xylem often develops spiral shaped structures to strengthen the sides of the vessels. Xylem is responsible for transporting water and minerals up the plant.
Many pictures can be found in Google for comparison.

Oliver.

Thank you, Oliver, for the identification and the thorough explanation. I checked Xylem on Google, and indeed there are many similar images. Thanks again.
