I have had a microscope of some kind since I was 7, and I am now 54. From age 12 until age 18 I looked at everything under the sun, but have always been fascinated with protists and other freshwater invertebrates. I did not get a "real" microscope until age 24 when a teacher sold me an old spencer microscope. I currently collect microscopes, and have for use a good quality binocular brightfield microscope, a polarizing microscope which I just purchased, and a phase contrast microscope. After some 40 years of using a microscope, I finally got some formal training from a retired college professor who loves to teach and use a microscope. I often wonder how much I have missed seeing in the last 40+ years due to a lack of training!
