Fisher pre-cleaned slides

I have about half a box of Fisher pre-cleaned slides dated 2005 that I recently re-discovered.  The slides all have a coating of some waxy white stuff on them… what can this be?  I remember when using them before that I always had to clean these "pre-cleaned" slides, but I don't remember this white stuff all over them.  It is easily removed with cleaning solution, plain water doesn't cut it.

Ideas?

A guess (most probably a wrong guess): could it be mildew?

Good thought, but I don't think so.  I tried taking photos, but it didn't work out well.

It looks like a white haze unevenly distributed along the surface of the slide.  If I try to wipe it off it just smears.  Soap and water or Windex take it right off.

I didn't think so either, but I couldn't think of a good explanationEmbarassed.  You say you tried to image it: did you try cleaning the top surface then putting the cover glass on a slide, contaminated-side down?

What I meant was that I tried photographing the slides with just the camera.  I have the microscope partially disassembled right now trying to correct alignment issues, but when I get it back together I'll try as you suggest.

Here's a shot of one of the slides at fairly low power (150x):

It just kind of looks like oil to me.  Maybe the slides had some kind of polish or something on them and over time it beaded up?  I don't know.
