Re: Lily pollen

Those are gorgeous! They make me want to learn how to colorize images. Thanks. Colorising is really easy. I can tech you how to do it in 10 minutes. Although easy to understand how its done, it is a tedious process with the brush tool to get all the details the way you like it. So far I have not en...

Lily pollen

Lily flower pollen. A masterpiece of nature’s artistry in every detail. Almost like the Faberge eggs of nature. Size is around 130 μm x 45 μm (= 0.13 mm x 0.045 mm). Dried in air, gold sputtered and imaged in a SEM. Colorized in Photoshop.

Wow! Aren't you lucky! I'll assume that the pumps came with it! I'd have to throw out both the clothes dryer and washing machine if I'd have any hope at running all of that equipment in my basement. I bet incidentals add up fast; sputtering sources are no joke! Yes, the system has three (rough) vac...

Re: Fossil diatom from Oamaru

Is that Carl ZEISS EVO LS 10 Lab6 your own or do you have regular access to it? I've often wondered about a used table-top SEM.... seems that for the cost of a decent modern optical system, you could get lucky with a basic SEM. I have my own in the basement. Besides Lab 6, it has EDAX Octane EDS an...

The rectangular structures are possibly the cells of the desmid: Bambusina borreri (= Bambusina brebissonii) See: https://www.desmids.nl/maand/nederlands/bambusina_brebissonii.html And of course: https://youtu.be/QxyQN2KNWb0 :D Looks very similar in shape, so most likely you are correct. Amoeba Arcella

Arcella Amoeba. DIC. 60X water immersion objective. Stack of plenty. One of my favourite amoeba image because it captures many interesting internal organelles, food, shell texture as well as pseudopods. Like a little school book illustration of an amoeba.

Reindeer lichen - Cladonia stellaris

This species (Caledonia stellaris) (sometimes called window lichen) belongs to the group of reindeer lichens and is often found on rock slabs or sand dunes in sparse pine forests throughout the country. It is distinguished from its close relatives, yellow-white reindeer lichen (Cladonia arbuscula) a...

Sticking with 275.
So I checked the exact figures. The diatom is 3625 pixels in diameter. 3625/6144*536.4 = 316.48. A big boy.

A beer says less than 2 fifty. I suspect the scale bar wasn't recorded when it was scanned. Aesthetics or something. The good thing about SEMs is that they record all data. Here is an extract from the EXIF: Store resolution = 6144 * 4608 Reference Mag = Out Dev Mag = 559 X Image Pixel Size = 87.31 ...

Re: Help: has anyone ever used Olympus DCW Darkfield condenser?

I use it all the time and it gives good results even with high NA objectives, but require careful alignment and oil between the top lens and the slide. Otherwise, it does not work properly. It is a picky condenser. Are you using it on an Olympus BH2 or Motic scope? No, I use it on a BX scope so no ...

Re: Fossil diatom from Oamaru

The great thing about SEM is knowing what structures you should be seeing. Do mammal fossils pre date fossil diatoms? I only have Miocene samples. Yes, if I recall correctly, animals dates back over 600 million years ago during the Ediacaran Period and the Cambrian Period. Mostly simple and soft-bo...

Re: Fossil diatom from Oamaru

1. A SEM has better depth of field than normal light microscopes. You can also decide the working distance you want and the compromise will be the resolution that suffer when you need more depth of field. I theory, you could do focus stacking, but is normally not needed. These are "single shots" if ...
