Cuterebra lepivora (aka., Rodent Bot Fly)
I recently scored a Cuterebra lepivora adult female fly. This pretty little fly was once a botfly larvae that developed in the skin and subcutaneous tissues of a small mammal (ex., dog, cat, rabbit, squirrel, other rodent). All images are focus-stacked micrographs taken using an Amscope stereomicros...

Re: Uneven color across photomicrographs
What lens (if any) are you using in the trinoc port below the amscope camera? Thanks for looking into this thing for me, Scarodactyl. The only lens below the camera is the Amscope 0.5X reduction lens ( https://www.amscope.com/0-5x-c-mount-reduction-lens-for-mu-series-cameras.html ) that is attached...

I'm not sure if this is the right section of the forum for this post, but I have a question for all you microscope heads out there pertaining to my microscope's optics. Re: Mold, bacteria biofilm, parasite, or something else?
This does not look like any parasite that I have ever seen. It poorly resemble some flagellate parasites (ex., Tritrichomonas , Giardia ); however, for this to be a protozoa, it would be need to be hundreds to thousands of times smaller. Of course, I have no doubt that there are undocumented monster...

They are NOT "acanthocytes" as noted above. Acanthocytes (aka., Spur cell, or burr cell) are characterized by 1-20 irregularly spaced, membrane projections of variable lengths; projections may be blunt spurs or clubs. Unlike the cells in your video, acanthocytes tend to have longer, more irregular ...

Magnifying Glass
An acquaintance of mine has a micro habitat with pond sludge, and wants a closer look at some of the organisms using a magnifying glass (not a microscope). Does anyone have any experience with magnifying glasses? Any recommendations for an affordable magnifying glass?

I see tetrads of cocci, clusters/ packets of cocci, bacilli, and coccobacilli. That's about as detailed as you can get without culture or mass spec. Species identification is not possible with only light microscopy in most cases.

Re: Sporangium of fungi?
It is a member of the family Mucoraceae, likely a Mucor , Rhizomucor , or Rhizopus . It is an immature sporangium though, notice how thick the wall is and the lack of obvious spores inside. You need the entire structure, intact, including the point of origin on the hypha and preferably, a mature sp...

Re: Photo stacking transparent objects
I've stacked objects larger than 100-200 micrometers thick. It is possible, but it can take hours to re-touch the final image, selecting only the areas of each image in the image stack that you wish to appear in the final stacked image. It is an unusual art consisting of both photography and digital...

Sporangium of fungi?
I found this in a pile of hay. I think it is the sporangium of some type of fungi because it still has an attached remnant of stalk. Can anybody confirm? Better yet, can anybody identify genus?

hei, i think it's the trematoda egg with out egg cap. It is very unlikely to be a trematode egg without the cap (opercula). Reasons why this may not be a trematode egg: 1. Hatched trematode egg shells retain their dark brown/ golden color. 2. Trematode eggs are very dense and rapidly sink to the bo...

I agree. It looks like the excystation of an organism.actinophrys wrote:Did you see it enter? Because my impression is that this looks a lot like a ciliate escaping from a resting cyst; it would be an unusual test, having almost no opening to pass out through.

Rapid and Efficient Method for Isolation, Concentration, and/or Cleaning of Diatoms (or other small organisms)?
First off, let me start by saying that the following is essentially "diatom hunting" from an ignorant, parasitologist's perspective. I know almost nothing about diatoms (except for what I have read on www.microbehunter.com ). Therefore, my ramblings could be completely irrelevant and/or obvious to ...

Skillful work, Aenima. You should be proud! I, too, am guilty of ebay insect scavenging! Well worth it! The detail in the hairs on the hind tarsus is very nice.

Parasitic Protozoan Oocyst
I found some coccidia (parasitic, apicomplexan protozoa) in the stool of a cat with chronic diarrhea of ~8 years duration. We recommended testing the other cat in the household, and he was also infected. Cystoisospora felis (aka., feline coccidia) unsporulated oocyst found in the fecal flotation of ...

Re: a kind of Amoeba?
Sweet images and video. Amazing technique. You are correct about the Entamoeba being a parasite. Entamoeba is a genus of parasitic protozoa that can be either non-pathogenic or pathogenic. Pathogenic forms may damage the host's intestines and liver, often causing diarrhea. Entamoeba histolytica trop...

On the left is Ludo, the giant beast from the movie Labyrinth . On the right is the butt end (i.e., the spiracles) of a Sheep Nose Bot ( Oestrus ovis ) larva, which makes its home in the warm, snotty nasal passages of sheep. When the larva has matured, it falls to the ground, burrows into the dirt, ...

Re: The Monster Hunter's Guide to Veterinary Parasitology
Very impressive body of work. We do "Micronaut" programs for kids -- and for the ones old enough to look at these "monsters" as a curiosity or challenge to medicine rather than a nightmare, this will be a tremendous resource. Well done. Thanks. Hey Pete, thank you for the very kind complement. Plea...
