Re: how scared should I be of mercury lamps

Monochrome emitters are plenty strong for brightfield fluorescence, even too strong in the blue range. Even with green (lime) which is the least efficient and thus weakest for a small emitter there was no issue on the scope I set up.

LED retrofits are not that difficult or expensive and don't tend to explode ever.

Oh wow, it's an actual trinocular head, not the photo addon. That's a valuable piece of equipment.

Re: B&L Stereozoom SZ7 accessiories

In this case there is a legitimate reason for the mount. The SZ7 has like double the reolution of other SZ family members and a fairly different optical system--its max NA of 0.2 handily beats Leica's current offerings in the series (and was equal to the recently discontinued S Apo). A normal SZ len...

They're not totally impossible to get. What magnification are you after? The sz7 is pretty sifferent from the others optically.

Re: Do I need another objective?

Oh, the normal plan 10x is a really good objective for its price, excellent corner to corner performance even direct on full frame and it also works surprisingly well with DIC, though I'd need to retest the best slider/condenser prism combo.

You're right. That is an unusual scope. In fact, I wasn't even aware that Zeiss made wall-mounted microscopes.
Jokes aside they totally do for surgical applications.

Macro Cosmos has tried them and they're definitely better than the previoud sapo line. They're not brand new and they go back before the Evident selloff.

Re: Do I need another objective?

Using my planapo 60x/1.40 on my e800 was a bit disappointing since it has a dry condenser which throttles resolution. The oil condenser is very rare, I have never seen one for sale. I get better results using it with epi illumination/epi DIC on my other scope since it acts as its own high na oil con...

Re: Leica Reichert Jung Polyvar (models)

Yes but the f.N. only matches the real or viewed ield with a 10X eyepiece.because they are the default and the system's logic is based entirely on 10X eyepieces. It seems to me that the confusion is arising from thinking of it this way, even if there's nothing technically wrong with it. A 1x object...

Re: Leica Reichert Jung Polyvar (models)

Field number is based on a hypothetical 1x objective, not a 10x eyepiece. It's just a question what the diameter of the imaged field would be with a 1x objective, regardless of how large it looks to the eye.

Re: Do I need another objective?

First things first, get a cheap 20x/0.75 apo. Make sure it is the labeled one. It's an incredible objective and absurdly cheap because they were widely used in gene sequencers. The 20x fluor slider works pretty well with it. Edit: currently the price is a bit higher, the last glut was a while back. ...

Re: Wild M8 vs Wild MZ3

Don't get an M3b imo unless it is quite cheap. Being a step mag isn't bad but only having 3 settings is a bit of a bummer vs 5 on the m3c or continuous on the m3z, the C is a basically strictly better with no optical downside, the m3z is somewhat nicer to use even if the zoom probably has some optic...

Re: Reichert U.S.A. and Leica. Why the undercorrection?

I understand why this was necessary in the 60s and earlier, but I do find it odd that Nikon was able to manage so well without additional corrections in the 80s, followed by Olympus and Mitutoyo, while Leica and Zeiss cling to it still. I kind of assume Leica and Zeiss should have the best engineers...

Re: what objectives have you tried on wild M8

65mm thread objectives have an added 1.25x magnification on m50/m60 systems like the M8, so it would act as a ~0.78x. Leica plan apo stereo objectives are quite nice.

Re: Polylite SC endusers(?)

That .32X fractional lens is to compensate for the tube length and reduce unwanted alterations in W.D. It isn't needed if the tube length is kept to something close to the reference length. My understanding is thst, as designed, a viewing or afocal photo eyepiece projects an image at infinity focus...
