A nice unit to be sure norm. I bought something a while back with the same objectives, and a tip for you, is be gentle touching these objectives, as the printing can wear off them if handled a lot.

I didn't realize it when I posted the comment above, but the only way it works is with the camera's auto-focus lens attached. Hence it is probably of limited value in microscopy.

Re: What is a good specimen or procedure to test quality of phase contrast?
I would type "phase contrast" into bing images and see what comes up. Then select the most prolific examples and find them in your local environment. Thus you will have many online images to compare with your own test subjects. Following the page link off bing will often lead to a good writeup as we...

Good advice. In my experience it's always cheaper to buy something "with" the upgrades you want than to upgrade later.75RR wrote:

Re: I was looking to get more out my microscope.
I was hoping there is more to owning a microscope rather than just looking at random cells. If you are an amateur that is serious about science there certainly is. A lot of it may seem boring at first glance though, like keeping a written log of your more interesting observations, perhaps in an A4 ...

As a general rule, I wind mine up to the very top, where it's brightest, and then lower it until I get good contrast. There are specifically stated position settings, but the people writing these in articles I have read usually say, "open it a little past the standard setting" and "adjust the conden...

Fascinating, thanks for posting it up Kurt. I came across a disused pool in a yard last week and the entire top 4 inches or so was a mass of green slime. I took a sample in a jar and will post some pix as soon as I get my camera setup to a decent standard.

You can set the camera to M (manual) mode. 28mm, 30mm or 35mm lens should work well with 10x visual eyepiece, as long as you couple them together. That's the problem zz, I don't want to expose my pancake lens ($350) to the vagaries of my homemade setup. Glad it works for you though, if the $14 tube...

No, it does not work for me, either (hovering the camera). But just pop on the adapter & drop into the eyepiece tube and you get a good image (though it's not perfectly parfocal with the remaining eyepiece). I think it may have to do with the camera's electronics needing a lens or adapter screwed o...

I don't think that you need an adapter with a lens. Cool. I'll test it by just hovering the camera, without lens, above the EP tube and see what I can see. Doesn't seem to work? We have the same camera, MII, same scope basically, but the pix are out of focus no matter how I focus with the microscop...

I currently use a smartphone on my upright Olympus CH, with mixed results, and spotted this which would allow me to connect my mirrorless Olympus OM- M5 into one of the EP sockets. It looks the part? But I have reservations... I know the lens arrangement in it might not be the highest quality optics...

I agree, but not (low) if the camera doesn't have 100, as low is no lower than 200 but uses a sort of emulation which can cause issues.MicroBob wrote:What ISO setting did you use?

Hi Mike. That's a great microscope you have. I used the earlier model, the ECE for a year, but recently upgraded to a CH with the long barrel objectives. I looked into this upgrading a while back and found it cost about the same price to buy the condenser and objectives separate, as it did to buy a ...
