Paint
Hi folks, I'm looking for a memory refresh. A couple of months ago someone on here came up with a name for a crackle / bubble finish paint. It came up as part of a thread not a thread in itself. Sounded just what I want. When I looked it up I found it was available in my country, surprise. I'm prett...

Re: A O Spenser 25X eyepieces
Thanks apochronaut
Thats useful info.
Yes they are the 186
Good to know they are decent optically.
Like you I doubt they will be used often, but if I can pick them up at the right price they will be useful to have around.
I thought I had Spencer spelt wrong

A O Spencer 25X eyepieces
Hi folks,
Does anyone have any experience with these eyepieces?
I can't find very much about them on the net.
Thanks

From a freshwater wetland pond.
Around 13 microns horn to horn.
Quite neat watching it slide along, it moved in a curve rather than a straight line.

Re: Size Elodea cel
Looks good. I found a couple of images on the net with field width stated then divided the number of cells into it, rough calculation. Both gave me around 75 - 80 micron length, 25 width. Guess it depends on which of the species you have under the scope as well. Then I found this https://plato.acadi...

Thanks Bruce
It nice to find that the hunting to try and pin this critter down a bit was successful.
Now to try and sort it out

Hi folks,
This one has been bugging me for a few days.
Metopus is my best guess so far.
Free swimming and constantly spiralling, cilli appearing to rotate around the "mouth"
In a freshwater wetland pond sample.

Hi folks,
Saw a few paramecia doing this the other day in one of my water samples.
I'm fairly sure as to the id of these but happy to be told otherwise.

Hi Charlie, Thanks for the tips. Yes we are well into spring and the variable weather that brings. More like winter out there this morning. Yes I use photoshop. In my world it's been as much a part of the imaging process as the camera since I discovered it way back at version 5.0 in 1998. Generally ...

Re: Wetland Cillates
Hi Bob, Yes I should probably re thunk the way I work. But it was definitely planned. Those 2 images took around 300 shots and 2 plus hrs to get them. Doesn't mean I had it planned properly, possibly never do :) Probably I should start sucking water out, but that will bring critters into my tissue. ...

Re: Wetland Cillates
Hobbyst46,
Thanks for the maths
I can understand that.
The "aquariums" I use are .2 mm high
Now with a big drop of water I can get .1
I'm now wondering if I have created problems for myself by using aquariums.
I do like free swimming critters.
Cheers for more things to think about

Thanks Bob,
What you say has just made me think.
So does a larger drop of water create a larger space between the slide and the coverslip?
Within reason.

Re: Wetland Cillates
Thanks hkv,
Yes I suspect you are right about the stress on the first one, it wasn't moving.
The holes were constantly changing size and moving.
All the others on the sample were swimming freely.
It makes me wonder how thin they must be to be able to swim freely between a slide and coverslip.

Hi folks, A couple of images from Travis Wetland, Christchurch, New Zealand Not sure of where they fit in the great taxonomy of things but guess the 2nd image is Paramecium. Re: Condenser Height Adjustment
I'm going to concur with Kurt on this. Informative thread. As per for me it shows I've been doing things wrong, nothing unusual. I'm slowly building a frankenstein fotoscope. When I had less light (10W led) than I do now I was using the condenser as high as possible to get as much light as possible....

Thanks folks,
I've played with ImageJ / Fiji in the past but not for this use.
Guess it's time to give it another try.
Thanks ImperatorRex, I had a quick look but that is image acquisition as well as measuring, I'm only after measuring software.

Hi folks,
What software do you use to measure the subjects on your images?
I've been using Piximetre

Just looking for other options.
Thanks

Freshwater Fingerprint
Hi folks,
Another from the not sure department.
Have found 3 of these over the last couple of weeks.
All have come from 2 separate freshwater troughs.
They have been used by cattle, sheep and a variety of birds over the years.
My thought is Lepocinclis.
Thanks for any thoughts.

It's a lot newer than I suspected, 1985.
Now to see what it gets to in the auction.

A versatile unit.
Have blown up a couple of other pics on the listing.
It appears as though the scope only goes up to 31x rather than the 40x of the JM
Unusual beast

Thanks Scarodactyl,
That's certainly the closest I've seen.
It's an unusual shape head as far as I can find for Olympus.
I've seen the stage / base on a couple of SZ's.

Olympus Stereozoom Model
Hi folks,
This microscope is for sale in my part of the world.
I can't work out the model.
It's not often google lets me down but this is one of them.
Any ideas ?
I guess being Olympus as long as the controls and optics are fine it should be a decent scope.
Thanks

Cheers 75RR, Yep that's a really neat site, but I hadn't seen that page before, really useful. Courtesy of that page I've now added an id to yet another image of mine, I'd called it a poached egg now know it's Diplophrys. This is also a nice amoeba site, there's overlap between them. http://www.hans...
