Re: Darkfield Adapter for Whole Slide Imaging
Maybe try using sodium silicate solution (water glass) to fill in the gaps between the led and the slide, though you left lose the rotation bit. You can also chart the wires with a thin layer of it to insulate them. I cannot remember, but adding some aluminum may make the sodium silicate have a high...

I wasn’t paying much attenion to what I was doing and loosed all three screws holding the nose piece in position on a AO series 20. Anyone have any advice on this. I wish I had a cross insert for the eye pieces. I have a cross Zeus slide, but even so in my opinion I should have a cross in the on the...

No problem. I still cannot find the missing lens from the condenser I have. I keep my eye out though.

Pure PTFE is a solid until ~327 C and is practically insoluble in everything. Anything claiming to be pure PTFE and is not a solid is not pure PFTE and has a carrier in it.

Try a saturated solution of calcium chloride and/or saturated solution of potassium acetate. The CaCl2 won’t dry out. Glycerol saturated with sodium borate (20 mule team borax) is nice but annoying to make. Pure wintergreen oil. Water saturated with thymol, which is insanely fragrant and not pleasan...

Without a nice atmosphere to help block the suns radiation, I don’t think could survive any reasonable amount of time.

I love those little guys. A tiny little vibration and they hide though. I have found them to be somewhat seasonal if you leave them near an exterior window.

AO 120 Binocular prism repair
I just recently picked up a nice AO 120, complete with the external lamp housing, the lamp socket, filters, transformer, and binocular head. Oh, and the 180 eye pieces. For $80 I think it was a bit of a steal. Anyway, I am not sure if it was in the shipping during cold weather or the reason the scop...

Re: can i wash and reuse bacterial heat set slides?
For high school, I would say use a mix of vinegar and original formula dawn dish detergent. When I ran a microbiology and mycology lab, we would put slides in a 2 liter container with the vinegar/dawn mix and let it sit until full. We then cleaned them all and let them dry. The stronger the acetic a...

Well, I know that there are biological series 10 with epi lighting setups that look like the one in the link you sent. Not the whole thing, just the light itself. If there is such an add-on to a series 20 or 10 I hope to some day get it. Off topic, perhaps, but does anyone recognize the extra piece ...

AO beam splitter/vertical illuminator
I was thinking of bidding on this eBay item number 153667503727. It is an AO 1111-3 beam splitter/vertical illuminator. However, it looks like it might have a damaged lens in one of the photos and I don’t know the light you would use for the vertical illumination. Any ideas guys.

You can read the field guide to bacteria for help on what can be useful when dealing with bacteria. I have a lot of experience in teaching undergraduate microbiology labs. The only thing we use microscopes for is to check microbe shape (which even its good scopes at 100x can be misleading or inconcl...

Does anyone know if the nosepiece, binocular, and halogen lamp socket from an AO microstar that is in their white, square time period (so like series 410 or so look) will fit a series 20? I got an amazing private offer considering what is on the microscope. I only have 30 hours or so. Again sorry fo...

No, it does. There was a paper published on it. If I can find it again I will post a link. I refuse to stop using it. I mean I’ve had to regularly work with KCN and NaCN. If I can protect myself from exposure to those I think I can for EtBr as well.

Oxidizing can produce even worse chemicals. For instance, bleach and ethidium bromide makes much worse chemicals than ethidium bromide. California actually allows 9 ng/L of ethidium bromide in the normal sewer system in some cities. I doubt you produce enough to cause any harm however you dispose of...

There are two types of hard drive disks. Some are made of aluminum and others are made of ceramic. Seems most people that cut them use a jewelers saw and some sort of cutting fluid I believe. Maybe some day I will give making a DIY water jet cutter. I know it has been done.

You have a point, but I do not see that as a reason to not generate such a list. I was thinking of things beyond just fixed vs infinite TL. A good example is the use of 70x LOMO WI lenses without the water immersion. Or knowing if I could screw a Zeus condenser into a AO condenser and still have pha...

Re: Relief Phase Contrast Microscopy - Article by Prof J. Piper in Microscopy and Analysis, vol 21, 2007.
I have ended up with two turret condenser bodies for my AO series 10 and 20 microscope. Once I get them both in working order (need another trinocular and series 20 lamp cord and socket) I will try to create a much more controlled test of this “relief phase contrast”.
