Re: Animal Hair

Thanks John. B!! Those are great and simple suggestions! I will have to try using the alcohol and changing the color of the background. I am particularly interested in trying the alcohol suggestion to remove some oils because I actually did try using lighting from above. My microscope (Nikon Optipho...

Re: Animal Hair

The camera that I am using is an Amscope USB microscope camera (5MP), and it is mounted to the microscope by one of the eyepieces (I don't have a trinocular head). The objective that I am using are not necessarily meant for biological material, but I thought they would be o.k. because there was no c...

Animal Hair

Hello Everyone! So my dad was out in the woods yesterday, and he found some very long hairs stuck to a tree right near some large animal tracks. It must be either a Bear or a Moose because those are the only animals large enough to make the tracks. Unfortunately the snow was deep, so the actual prin...

Re: Beginner camera advice please!

I think I'm going to go with the 5mp. It's not that much more extra money so I feel like it will be worth it. I just have one more (slightly embarrassing  ) beginner question to ask. How do I go about figuring out the size of the eye piece tube?

Re: Beginner camera advice please!

Hello! I have taken all your advice into consideration, and what you guys are saying makes a lot of sense. Getting a USB camera does seem to be my best option. I'm particularly excited that I will be able to see the images directly on my computer :D ! After looking at some USB cameras I have found t...

Re: Beginner camera advice please!

Hello! So I currently have a pretty basic Nikon digital camera, it is a point and shoot camera (Nikon Coolpix L28). As for my microscope I have been looking into purchasing a used tirnocular head if I need to. I guess that leads me to another question, is it necessary to get a trinocular head when I...

Beginner camera advice please!

Hey guys! I have some questions that I am a little embarrassed to ask, but I am new to microscopy, and I am just trying to start taking some photographs with my microscope. I have been looking at everyone's pictures on this forum, and they look so cool! I would love to try it out for myself! Unfortu...

New lens?

Hi everyone! I'm pretty sure I mentioned this before, but I am new to microscopy. That being said, I some questions. Yesterday I received a used trinocular head for my Nikon Optiphot. I got it pretty cheap, so as I expected it doesn't work. I realized a major problem with it right away. There is no ...

Re: Test picture

Beautiful Diatoms! Was this picture taken by placing the camera on a tripod and focusing it on the eye-piece? I thought you had mentioned that was one of the methods you used back in the "my microscope" area?

Re: Nikon Optiphot

Thanks for the information gekko! You are correct about this microscope being used to look at metal objects. I purchased it from a man who used it to look at microchips. When I bought it I didn't know that the objectives would be different, I thought all I needed to do was to add a base light. I hav...

Re: Nikon Optiphot

Well, I'm not exactly sure, but from what I found the numbers on my objectives indicate that they are not meant to be used with a cover slip because the image may not be as clear. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B3PuL07IIAA4mDR.jpg As you can see in the picture (hopefully it showed up!) the numbers on t...

Re: Nikon Optiphot

I clicked the "Img" button at the top, and inserted a copy of the URL for the picture in the middle where the mouse was. I could not see a photo until I hit "preview" and then I was able to see the photo. I posted it, and when I view the post the picture is there. Here I'll try again below. https://...

Nikon Optiphot

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B3OGia3CAAAKulC.jpg Here is my Nikon Optiphot! So, the major modification I made... First, as you can see there is a base light, and a light condenser. That was not on the original that I bought. I had to get another base that had the base light, and I had to get the con...

Re: Hello!

I had to make modifications to the base mostly. Basically I had to get a new base because when I bought it, it did not have a base light or condenser that is necessary to look at biological things. I found a base used that had a base light, reassembled everything together, and luckily it worked out!...

Hello!

I am new to the forum, and I guess I'm a beginner with my microscope as well! I use a Nikon Optiphot that I bought used for the right price. I had to modify it slightly so I would be able to look at biological stuff, but it's just perfect now! I don't have a camera attachment though, so I have gotte...
