Re: Wanted: Nikon CF plan apo 60x

Thanks for the kind and helpful responses. I am excited to hear several glowing recommendations of the objective.

Tonight I will take some pictures of the process of making slides of my fossil material, and post some sample images.

Re: Wanted: Nikon CF plan apo 60x

Thanks for the heads up. I think I might bight the bullet and go for the objective at deal corner. I've got a 60x plan achro that I use quite a bit, but since I am making color micrographs for publication, I'm sure the plan apo will give me a bit better color rendering. The plant and fungal fossils ...

Wanted: Nikon CF plan apo 60x

Hello,
I'm looking for a Nikon CF plan apo 60x dry objective. The newer CFN 60x plan apo oil objectives are much more common, but I'd like to stick with a dry objective for the fossil materialI work with. Please contact me if you know where I can find one.

Thanks!

Looking for a B&L Stereozoom stand

Hi,
I'm looking for a stand for a stereozoom head I just bought. Given how common these microscopes are, I'm surprised how few stands are for sale on Ebay.

Anybody have one they don't need?

I'm looking to use it with a Stereozoom 7 if the model matters.

Thanks!

Re: Moss Hand Sections

Beautiful leaf preparations! The guide cells (also called deuters) are actually sugar conducting cells in the leaves. Sugar-conducting cells (leptoids) are common in moss leaves, but are only found in the stems of Polytrichaceae. Hydroids and leptoids are found in the seta of many mosses. Hydroids a...

Re: Moss Dissection

I will post a new thread tomorrow or Monday where I describe my process for IDing mosses based only on their gametophytes. Bearing in mind which characters are important can speed up the process a lot. Fortunately, a lot of the process is simply making detailed observations of leaf anatomy and morph...

There is some wonderful discussion of mounting media here! To specifically address your questions Hobbyist46, In an appropriate permanent medium, I think the green color may be preserved for years. Re: Moss Dissection

It looks like at least the bbs field key is still available at the above link, which is very useful. Bryophytes have very broad distributions compared to vascular plants, so I will post some resources which are for North American mosses,. These links will probably work reasonably well for identifyin...

Re: Another Moss Dissection

Also, Mr. Sonchus,
I applaud your desire to make permanent mounts of mosses. Very few mosses have ever been subjected to rigorous anatomical study. Almost certainly if you imbed most moss species in paraffin and make microtome sections, you will be the first person in history to do so.

Re: Another Moss Dissection

Wonderful preparations of both the leaves and capsules! I agree that it is certainly a member of the genus Atrichum, and probably A. undulatum. This moss is a member of the family Polytrichaceae, which possess the most complex anatomy and morphology of any mosses. The lamellae are actually a way to ...

Re: Moss Dissection

It is wonderful to see some mosses in the limelight! The excitement in this thread is palpable. Those archegonia images are beautiful! I find that for mosses a one to one mixture of PVA and pure glycerine makes a fantastic mounting medium which lasts slightly longer than PVA by itself. There is a jo...

Moss leaf with papillae

Hi everyone, Here is a image of a moss I collected and am working on identifying. Check out the multiple protrusions (papillae) on each leaf lamina cell! Magnification is 400X This was taken using a Nikon Labophot with trinocular head, CF plan apo 40x objective, Martin Microscope adapter, and a Cano...

Re: Nikon condenser question

Thanks again for your detailed replies. While I am an experienced microscope user, I haven't given much thought to the equipment I use until recently, so I hope that my questions don't come across as too pedantic. It sounds like using a Nikon 1.4 achro apl condenser would give me the best possible r...

Hello from the Pacific Northwest

Hi everyone, I have found this forum to be an invaluable source of information, and wanted to introduce myself. I am a PhD student studying Botany at Oregon State University. I study the evolutionary history of mosses, hornworts, and liverworts (which are collectively known as"bryophytes"). Since th...

I am looking for the setscrew which holds a camera/camera adapter in place for a Nikon Labophot trinocular head. Does anyone here know a good source for this part?

Thanks!
