Re: Rotifer

Thank you for the reply.
You may well be right. If it is, it's difficult to identify out of its characteristic tube.
Many thanks

Is this a mould spore?

Hi All. I'm assuming that this is a picture (1000x) of mould spores from my pond sample but you may well know better than me. Any help gratefully received. Thanks in advance. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48280680057_fdf3e41906_k.jpg IMG_0041 by [url=https://www.flickr.com/photos/144618088@N07/

A ciliate thats similar to so many others.

I realise that this is a very common ciliate form, however I'm having trouble nailing it down to anything specific. it's medium sized and appears fairly regularly in my garden pond. Has anybody out there seen any of these? All ideas gratefully received. Thanks in advance. https://live.staticflickr.c...

I'm coming across a lot of these at the moment and thought I'd share some pictures. They're rather beautiful I think. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1978/31438794488_bd8c22c37e_b.jpg https://flic.kr/p/PU93hQ by [url=https://flic.kr/p/2bhUPge] https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4887/44823628975_2b053157e...

Re: Should be an easy ciliate to identify

Yes, it's probably Stylonychia (the jaunty angle of the caudal cirri is fairly distinctive :D). Profile views are not usually very good for identifying ciliates, though. When possible, try to get a "plan view" of the critter's belly (ventral surface), so that you can clearly see the mouth and impor...

Re: Should be an easy ciliate to identify

I believe I have seen Euplotes sp. running around like that. In case you have not seen it here is a link to the Ciliate Diversity Chart. Hours of identifying fun to be had. http://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=806 Euplotes is a good candidate, you could be right. Thank...

Re: My first symbiotic ciliate - probably

great shot indeed - i've also seen these in my own samples - i noticed they appear to have two 'modes' of behavior; sometimes zipping around, and other times remaining still for quite a while with their insides swirling around in circular motion, this is the best time to get images i think. :) They...

Photo stacking transparent objects

All When scanning a slide at 400x, I caught glimpses of a ghostly outline of what I thought was a daphnia case, however, after taking about 20 photographs and using a stacking program it revealed the following. On transparent objects photo stacking really doesn't work very well and while I'm not sur...

I believe this little fellow has a symbiotic relationship with algae.
I’m quite pleased with the picture considering he really didn’t want to be photographed.
