Very nice pictures - looks like you used DIC or oblique lighting. I spent time down in Houston, but the water around Galveston wasn't very clearn I remember.

Re: What is The best microscope camera?
Hi - the best cameras for photomicrography are DSLRs, followed by C mount cameras and then cell phones. I tested some and compared them in an article on my website. https://www.canadiannaturephotographer.com/cellphones_dedicatedcameras_DSLRs.html - I have linked to the original images under the smal...

Re: Crystals - Callus remover, Compoun W etc Methods
Hi the solvent used for amino acids was Deionized water and 95% Ethanol (Everclear from the Liquor store) in a ratio of 1:1 to 1:4. You need both water and ethanol. Other alcohols did not work for me. Only the callus remover needs to be spread out thinly, the amino acids will do this by themselves. ...

I enjoy making crystals to study in polarized light during the cold winter days in Canada when temperatures reach down to - 30 C as the ponds are frozen. I am attaching some pictures and I also posted an article on my web site where I explain how to make the crystals for those new to photographing c...

Over the summer I enjoy collecting pond samples north of Calgary with my wife. One of the most fascinating organisms I found are euglenids of various types. So I collected my best pictures and videos and present them in an article on my web site: https://www.canadiannaturephotographer.com/euglenoids...

I watched the video - Keyence is a company that is offering zoom video microscopes that I am looking into, but costs are high, software is proprietary. i hope to test a system in the near future. The ability to focus stack on the fly is amazing. The top of the line microscope offers 6,000X but I saw...

Predator and Prey Didinium versus Paramecium
I have been watching Didinium feed on Paramecium and interact with other ciliates. I could not find Didinium in ponds near where I live so ordered some from from Boreal labs. Paramecium are common but have never found Didinium in ponds or lakes. Has anyone found Didinium and if so where and was it a...

HI Crb5 - you make a good point about fluorescence. I have a UV light I use for my stereoscope. I watched your video which is very nice and will be sue to link to it in a future article. One of the best subjects to photograph during the winter especially at higher latitudes are crystals. I have been doing this a long time, but only recently found a way to get consistent flower-like crystals using amino-acids - B Alanine and Glutamine. Other substances like Menthol and Vitamin C prod...

Rotifers from the summer of 2020
I love photographing rotifers as they are just the right size for light microscopy, not too small and not too big. There are 2149 species so unlike ciliates their identification is a bit easier. Some rotifers can move quickly my solution is to compress them slightly by drawing water with piece of pa...

Re: The best Camera for Photomicrography
RE - Diatom colour shift - that is my fault. I shoot RAW files and when I process the images I must have used a slightly different setting, or I may have twisted the DIC compensator slightly between taking the pictures which changes the background colour. Sometimes I see colour fringing, not sure if...
