Re: Need microscope recommendation.

At the risk of being called a bottom shopper, I bought a Trinocular OMAX with 5 MP camera and ToupView software (well under $500 US). I don't even want to hook in my Canon DSLR anymore as the on board camera takes beautiful images. As a bonus, forget the microscopy features of ToupView, I can import...

Re: Picture magnification question?

There are a lot smarter than me in this illustrious group, but I'll add my two cents. Magnification becomes irrelevant because the final size of the photomicrograph depends on the device it is viewed on. Projected on a wall or PC screen or a tiny cell phone screen. PLEASE! I could be wrong about wha...

Stacking focus consistency

Hi Folks, I have a modest Trinocular OMAX with 6 M camera and ToupView. I have done some good stacks but wish for more accuracy in the focus process. Unfortunately, my microscope has no hash marks or scale on the focus knobs. Are round, calibrated stick on labels available somewhere? Will they even ...

Re: OMAX 5MP A3550U Camera & ToupView software

I've got a similar Omax Trinolular with 5 M camera. What a great source of info in this discussion group. Many thanks. Going to look for a Twain driver so I can also link to my Canon T3i. Is this possible? I always do final focus on the pc screen zoomed in a bit Toupview EDF stacks great even though...

Re: $30 mystery condenser

Thank you all - very grateful that you pros took the time to reply. Just for the record, this ugly step-sister condenser does a pretty good dark field using 4x objective. (I'll take some pics and post them) It only cost $30 and the eBay seller made no claims so I will keep it. I would only add, I sw...

Re: $30 mystery condenser

You would have to post some more pictures, principally from the top and the bottom, in order to deduce just what it is, unless someone happens to have had experience with one like it. The specification 1.25 immediately implies that it is an oil immersion condenser but that kind of flies in the face...

Re: $30 mystery condenser

It's part of a phase condenser system, like this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Phase-Contrast-Set-for-Compound-Microscope-w-Three-Condensers-Three-Objectives/121365841453?hash=item1c41f7c62d:g:-aUAAOSwP7NbiXIx:rk:14:pf:0 The darkfield effect is apparently just from the stop effect of the condenser ...

Re: $30 mystery condenser

Sorry, I took a couple photos but all were way too large. Here's a photo of the bottom and top, reduced in size to enable UL.
Thanks again

$30 mystery condenser

Hi folks, Can anyone tell me what kind of condenser I bought for $30 on eBay? It works nicely with my 4x objective for dark field (enough reason to keep it) - but not much else despite the NA 1.25 and 10x marking on the condenser? For it to do dark field at higher mags do I need to use oil between i...

Re: Care and feeding of protozoa zoo?

Thanks to both of you for the great tips. I will try them. You probably know that "ecosphere" deals with similar aquariums - mostly closed.
Also, a paludarium is a new term I searched and found very cool terrarium/aquarium combos.
Thanks again, very cool to have a brain trust willing to help!

Care and feeding of protozoa zoo?

Does anybody have some words of wisdom or links to resources regarding keeping a stagnant water aquarium year round? I gathered some river water and kept it in a 1 gal, lighted aquarium (with aeration) but it just kinda flopped. I bought some live duck weed and threw it in. No duck weed, no more! Ha...

Well, I took 75RR advice and inverted and then shopped the hell out of the pic I posted. Very nice rework there ^^^ Have a look at the large version of this image on wikimedia: https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Anthocyrtium_hispidum_Haeckel_-_Radiolarian_(34986365113).jpg I think you can be...

Re: Hi from PA, USA

Thank you both.
"That is an amazing image of a radiolaria.
I take it you inverted the original darkfield image.
Is it Anthocyrtium hispidum?"

No that's a brightfield photo- but you have a great suggestion there!

Anthocyrtium hispidum? I never bothered looking it up but I'm going with your ID.

Hi from PA, USA

Hi, Mr. Kim's many videos on YouTube led me here. I'm retired and have loved lenses, telescopes, microscopes, etc. since I was a kid - I know that's kinda weird but I suspect you might understand. ;-) Anyhow, I just got a modest OMAX trinocular microscope and 5MP. The image quality blows me away and...
