Algae Forests on Decaying Leaf

Here I look at the edge of a leaf I found decaying in a small channel of water.
I don't know where to begin identifying the algae let alone the mycelia and bacterial strands emerging into the canopy
but it all looks vvv cool. Thought I'd share.

Cheers

Re: Aeolosoma hunting Urocentrum turbo

Thanks so much for the clarification. No wonder I was struggling with an ID! I was assuming their suction feeding and bristles was enough to place them into Aeolosoma . I found some more film I took of the worms in the second video. I don't recall them ever building any case or shelters. https://you...

Aeolosoma hunting Urocentrum turbo

Does anyone have any experience observing these freshwater worms? They're starting to really fascinate me with their varied behaviors. I read somewhere where detritivore species are being looking into for water treatment as they can go through so much sludge. My kind of microbe! This one was hunting...

Mites in the Worm Bin

Hello! I opened my worm bin yesterday and I found hundreds of these little mites covering the surface of the bin. Not sure where to begin to identify to species. Supposedly there a great number of these mites still to be discovered.. It seems like they might be beneficial to the composting so I'm no...

Large rotifer with diverse microbiome

Large bdelloid rotifer. It had a lot of bacteria and other microbes stuck to it that some larger protozoa were feeding on.

Urocentrum turbo and fungus?

I think that these are Urocentrum turbo? Might this be some kind of fungus or bacteria growing around the (microspora?) algae?

Wow that's incredible! So they just end up ripping each other apart? Sounds quite familiar!

Re: Strange cell. Ciliate?

Hi Bruce.

Here is some video I took of what could potentially be the Spirostomum? These were both taken from the same sample as the other.

Re: Reintroduction

Thanks Kirby! :D Ross, I'm not sure what the difference is but I am currently using brightfield condenser with Oliver's custom filter design. I found some projection film that fits between the filter ring and can glue aluminum cutouts to it to give a totally dark background. Works great! Actually th...

Small free swimming ciliates

No idea what these little vacuum cleaners could be but they were fun to watch!

The plant is milfoil.

Re: Strange cell. Ciliate?

Yes! I do remember seeing some ciliates that resembled Spirostomum thoughbI did not know that is what they're called. I may have it on video. Let me check.

Reintroduction

Hi everyone I created this account here a couple years back and was never really active but now that I've had more free time and a decent DSLR my microbehunting hobby has been rekindled! It started as a way for me to better ID mushrooms but I've been exploring beyond that domain more recently. I wor...

Strange cell. Ciliate?

https://youtu.be/MBDCwX0Naak Found in a freshwater dune swale sample I took last month. Not my best video but at least I caught it on camera. I have not had any luck finding others like it in the sample. Could those green things be algae? My best guess right now is a fissuring Stentor but I don't kn...

Wait, I just read that last statement of yours.
I did not realize 40% overlap was required. That may be my problem!

Re: Problem stitching images

I also thought that might have been what happened but when repeating the process for another pair of images I get similar results. https://i.imgur.com/aJJrfjI.jpg I guess it's possible that I had bumped the camera each time I translated the view but it seems unlikely. The camera is pretty secure. Ma...

Re: Problem stitching images

Thanks for the replies. I tried your idea 75RR by quickly editing out the background of both images and stitching. This is the result: https://i.imgur.com/U0ww5db.jpg Still does not seem to want to align the images properly. I am think Michael may be right about the scaling issue. Not sure what coul...

Problem stitching images

I am new to this so there is probably a simple solution to this. I am trying to stitch together two focus stacked images but at the area where the two images are blended together the two images are offset from each other and creates a double vision effect. I'm guessing it has to do with the lens dis...

Hello from the Midwest! Interest in soil health

Hello everyone I am somewhat new to microscopy. During my biochem undergrad I had taken some biology courses like microbiology and immunology that gave me some basic experience with microscopy. Recently I have become more interested in agriculture and am looking to that as a possible direction for m...
