Re: Nikon Plan APO 40x 160 TL in an OMAX (Chinese Microscope) 160 TL?
Hi 75RR, I am saving up to upgrade to a DIC microscope. In the meantime, I was considering better objectives for the OMAX. And pass it on to my nephew. He is interested in biological sciences. Keeping expenses low. Not sure it would be worthwhile. I may be able to re-purpose higher-end objectives on...

Re: Nikon Plan APO 40x 160 TL in an OMAX (Chinese Microscope) 160 TL?
Apochronaut, your detailed response is appreciated!! On your #3 is working distance. Comment. Would an oil objective with a 1.0 N.A. be better than a dry objective with a 0.95 N.A? I have two choices both are used and at the same price. 1) Nikon Plan APO 40x /0.95 DRY 160 TL with Collar RMS 2) Nikon...

Nikon Plan APO 40x 160 TL in an OMAX (Chinese Microscope) 160 TL?
Can I expect a better picture (photograph) resolution from a Nikon Plan APO 40x objective screwed into an OMAX (Chinese Microscope) than the objectives that came with the OMAX microscope?

Not sure if this helps MicroBob. A paper by Jonannes Hallman and Sergei A. Subbotin, Methods for Extraction, Processing and Detection of Plant and Soil Nematodes recommends that for permanent mounting of nematodes: "For permanent mounts, a very small drop of anhydrous glycerol (heated for 4h at 40°C...

Re: Glycerine vs glycerol and refractive index are both equivalent?
MicroBob >> do you know how to dry glycerine that has picked up moisture over time? The "A Simple Express Technique to Process Nematodes" assumes that water evaporates. Maybe store glycerine in a dry area for a few days -- like in a kitchen oven (turned off) or vegetable dehydrator? https://www.ncbi...

Thanks apochronaut. I believe I may have a few varieties of Sclerotinia. I think it is common in the area -- also affecting squash and sunflowers. Locals seem to attribute most plant stem and roots issues with pythium. I am sure how that got started.

Which camera companies make their own sensors? Re: Do it yourself double cover slips to enable observations from both sides?
Come to think of it they may be easy to make. 1) Drill a 20 mm hole in the center of a strip of aluminum about the size of a slide (size 25 mm 75 mm), 2) Center and mount with nail polish, or beeswax a coverslip over the hole. 3) Add specimen, dry mount another coverslip, over the specimen, sandwich...
