Re: Six Ciliates from this week
Nice sharp detail - the beating cilia. I'm intrigued by the squiggly feature on #1.

It looks to have a similar to structure to a rotifer's trophi.

Re: Heliozoa IDs
Thanks for the reply Bruce. The more time I spend searching online the more I believe that 2-4 are Raphidiophrys. And what I described as ectoplasm is, I suppose, actually a transparent layer of scales. Next time I come across them I'll rack the focus back and forth more and perhaps try for a stacke...

Heliozoa IDs
Hi I will be posting some of my observations of Heliozoa to YouTube. I have some images I have tentatively identified and hope someone can confirm or correct them. I used the Protist Information Server http://protist.i.hosei.ac.jp/ in identifying them. The most confusing thing in identifying them is...

Lecane rotifer
While preparing a slide I applied a bit too much pressure to the cover slip. It injured a rotifer but provided an opportunity to observe a stationary subject. Standard and oblique illumination used. It was recorded a few months ago so I don't recall the objectives used - probably 20x and 40x. iSXDkB...

Re: Trithigmostoma, Chilodonella, other Chlamydodontina or something else?
Thanks for the reply Bruce. From what I've read this group can be hard to identify. I have recorded similar examples - cyrtos clearly seen, more features visible.

Trithigmostoma, Chilodonella, other Chlamydodontina or something else?
I find this cilliate grazing at the margins of algal clumps. Reasonably common, usually find 4 or 5 per preparation. Nearest example I can find on the net is Trithigmostoma. Shape seems right but I can't discern a cyrtos. Any suggestions as to its identity? 10x -20x - 60x objectives. unk_cil_10x.jpg...

Re: Amoeba
Hi 75RR
I took your earlier advice and purchased a 20x and 60x objective. I've shot some amoeba footage at 60x and will be posting it to my YouTube channel.

Re: Amoeba
Hi janvangastel Perhaps you could culture your own. I collected some pond water (with algae in it) and placed it in a large jar. I added some drops of liquid fertilizer. A few days later it turned a nice shade of green. It's full of small round algae (see picture). It seems to be the perfect amoebae...

Amoeba on the hunt and feeding. Much smaller amoeba can be seen at the top right corner. 7x normal speed. 20x objective.

Dero sp.
Found this specimen in a sample of pond water I have brewing at home. A worm with a "hand". After some research it appears to be a species of Dero from the family Naididae, the hand being the worms gills. Camera at prime focus using 4x and 10x objectives.

After looking through Kahl and referencing the net it appears they are scyphidia, probably "constricta".

Can anyone identify these cilliates? I find them attached to algal clumps sweeping up food. As their lower half is always obscured I can't tell if they have a stalk or not. I've never seen them contract (or move). First image 10x objective, second 40x. unk_cilliate.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com...

I'd only ever seen naked amoebae before, I thought this fella had latched onto something too big to eat.

Growing on the cover slip?
Can anyone identify this? I think it is growing on the cover slip (the rotifer was moving under it). I recycle my slides and coverslips. I clean them in disinfectant and dry them. Perhaps I missed something.

Re: Testate amoeba
I agree about the length, all the videos I've created so far are all a bit too long. The file is almost 1 Gig at 1080p. Is there any way of forcing embedded videos to load at low resolution? I use 4x and 10x with the camera at prime focus. This was shot at 10x. The 40x has next to none working dista...

Re: Another Australian
Hi 75RR Rotifers are great and I didn't know they even existed until a few weeks ago. I see mostly bdelloid and lecane. I have also seen paramecium and amoeba (the blobby sort and testate) something I've been wanting to see since primary school science. My microscope is a Radical RMH-4T from India. ...
