Re: Green algae ID

Thanks so much NachoBen! So I guess these are Gemmae and you’ve just opened up a new alleyway I can get lost in. 😁

Green algae ID

Does anyone have an idea what type of green algae this is, I can’t seem to find anything like it in the keys I’ve checked out. It came from a moss patch on a tree and there were many of these throughout the moss.

Re: Protist aquarium- how long should I run air pump

I’ve been doing a lot of reading about this and I guess the key is balance, however that can be attained. The other thing is that these little ecosystems tend to crash periodically so it seems best to keep at least two going. Right now my mud and dead leaf bowl is just exploding with life and I’m ge...

Re: Protist aquarium- how long should I run air pump

The filter that came with my 3 gal tank does very little, the reviews all complain about how little water goes through it. Perfect!
If I were you I’d try the tank without aeration to see how things develop. Is there a reason that you feel that aeration is required?

Re: Protist aquarium- how long should I run air pump

I’m at the same stage you are; just beginning to experiment. I’ve got a fishbowl with about 1 gal of river water, river sediment and dead leaves sitting in a window ledge. It’s doing well after about 3 weeks with a good population of daphnia, cyclops and some protists. There are ciliates and rotifer...

A daphnia momma

Just setting up the microscope and thought I’d check out some daphnia I had collected before the river froze over. Put her under a cover slip with a big drop of water and luckily had the camera on the microscope already. When I looked at the slide they were just popping out and starting to swim away...

Hi Don, nice to meet a fellow Manitoban. My guess is you’re waiting for spring too.

WTB DIC microscope

I’d be interested in a complete DIC system from one of the big four brands. Must be willing to ship to Canada.
Thanks, Harry

Re: Hello from Manitoba!

Thanks, eh? I see we have the same microscope, a laborlux S. Really like that scope, so easy to use. Got some water samples during our thaw and see lots of stuff already jumping around so microscopy might be a go soon. Now to get serious about that DIC scope.

Hello from Manitoba!

Hi gang, I’ve been in an out of microscopy for a number of years, the “out” part mainly due to the influence of other hobbies. It seems my interest has been rekindled after watching a whole bunch of YouTube videos, mainly those featuring microbehunter. I own the following instruments. Zeiss Universa...
