Re: Wild M8 vs Wild MZ3

I think you might be able to find a Pl Apo for the Wild probably for around 300-400 euros, depending on condition. At least if you have time to wait on deals. If in a hurry, might cost double that. If I recall correctly, the WD for a 1x Pl Apo is around 40-50mm.

Re: Centering & adjusting the Leitz 100Z lamp?

Based on what I read of Leitz 600 and 400 series condensers, their intercept distance with the flip-up top is around 1.2mm, please see below. Doesn't this mean that my problems are likely caused by the condenser not reaching a high enough position, close enough to the slide? Please see the photo I ...

Re: Centering & adjusting the Leitz 100Z lamp?

On a proper setup, the condenser top lens should be able to nearly touch the slide bottom - within less than a millimeter. At least, to allow oiling the condenser to the slide for oil immersion imaging. However, the geometry of the stage and condenser carrier could allow the top lens to emerge too ...

Re: Centering & adjusting the Leitz 100Z lamp?

It's a bitza. Turns out that the stage is not incompatible with the condenser and it's rack. Instead the condenser rack was mounted too low and it was stuck there. There is a thumbscrew on the right side of the condenser rack that, when loosened, let's the condenser mount slide properly up. This re...

Re: Centering & adjusting the Leitz 100Z lamp?

Thanks. I was able to realign the lamp condenser. It is straight now, not tilting. Also made a DIY target from a circular frosted glass filter. I think I was able to center the lamp according to the instructions in the 100Z user manual. Then I tried setting up the 402a Zernike condenser that I have ...

Re: Centering & adjusting the Leitz 100Z lamp?

Further investigation revealed that the lamp condenser (to the left from the bulb) seems to be pretty misaligned. Isn't that supposed to be standing straight and not tilted like in the photo?

Hello,

How do I center and adjust the lamp on a Leitz 100Z lamp when there is no adjustment disc?

Re: Wild M8 vs Wild MZ3

I agree with Scaro. Plus the darkfield base is a big advantage to have as an option, even if you mostly use gooseneck LEDs. Darkfield really improves things on a number of different subjects, compared to reflected light or transmitted brightfield. In fact, darkfield on a stereo is almost my go-to li...

Re: Leitz Diavert, modernization (kind of)

Thanks. This is a good overview of that Olympus objective series.

I'll probably first look at the Leitz Labovert line of 160mm tube length objectives. They may provide the best quality/cost ratio.

Re: Leitz Diavert, modernization (kind of)

I think there was a special Plan Apo series made for the Olympus IMT-2 and these had a longer working distance. However, you are right that this is crucial and needs to be verified. … Having just started my journey in the opposite direction [ bought an IMT-2 yesterday ], I will post links, later to...

Re: Leitz Diavert, modernization (kind of)

The direct successor of the Diavert was the DL IM. First under the Leitz brand then Leica. Under Leica brand it made the change from finite to infinite optics. The Labovert was a very special animal standing separately. When using Olympus objective the fitting Olympus eye-pieces will give best resu...

Leitz Diavert, modernization (kind of)

Hi people, I was recently looking for info on the Wild M40 inverted microscope, one of which my university unit still has for field course teaching purposes. That scope has not been maintained very well and is obviously very long in the teeth. Anyway, on that googling trip, I bumped into this articl...

Re: Leitz Orthoplan darkfield: dedicated DF or phase condenser?

The Polyvar DF condenser would have been a toric type and possibly with a wider front toric lens than earlier versions, for instance that used on the Zetopan, which only had an 18mm f.n. However, in order to save the cost of design and patenting , they might have split the DF function in two and us...

Re: Leica Reichert Jung Polyvar (models)

There's an estimate in this thread that some models of Polyvar originally cost 'tens of thousands of dollars'. Does anyone know more precisely? Perhaps find an original price list. I've read that a fully specced Leitz Aristoplan had a cost of roughly 100 000 USD. I wonder what fully specced (DIC & f...

Carl Zeiss Jena, Jenaval

Hello. I have a Jenaval in need of some restoring and maybe some components as well. This is a 'rescue' scope that has been in a departmental storage for who knows how long, at least a decade if not two. Fortunately in room temperature and dry air. Surprisingly, most mechanical parts seem to move, a...

Re: to sell :Wild Leica operating stereomicroscope rotation plate 445349

Okay, in that case it is maybe best to forget the swap. I value the Wild eyepiece pairs with diopter adjustment more than this rotation device. I could have parted with two pairs (of different mag) of the non-adjustable eyepieces.

Re: to sell :Wild Leica operating stereomicroscope rotation plate 445349

I think I have a couple pairs of different eyepieces for Wild stereos, some higher mag as well, some originals from the M8 era and even before. Doe your binocular have the diopter adjustment on the binocular tube or is a newer type without that (relying on diopter adjustment being on the eyepieces)?

I have not done that direct comparison. However, I have several Wild and Leica stereo Planapo -objectives and have never paid more than maybe 600 euros (I think it was around that sum for the Leica 2x Planapo in extremely good condition). For 1x Planapos the cost was 300-400 a piece on average. In s...

Which one did the OP end up getting?

Had I seen this topic in time, I would have said the same thing as the above posters: both scopes are very good choices and a lot would depend on what they are equipped with, plus condition of optics. Those things being equal, can't go wrong with either :-)

That all tracks. The reference focal length of the m3z is 100mm, so 2x is going to give you a 200mm tube lens focal length. Incidentally I have an optem 10x/0.45 HR objective which Leica rebadged for use on their macro/stereo fluorescence setups (z series macrofluo and the fluocombi, the descendant...
