Re: American Optical series 20 microscope illumination
Thank you for your reply. I ordered 4 frosted filters for my microscope. Will see how that works out. My AO20 came from a hospital in Chicago but I have forgotten the name. Main reason I bought it was its excellent condition. It’s like brand new. Thank you for the list of objectives. I will be looki...

American Optical series 20 microscope illumination
I have an American Optical series 20 that I have been working with for 3 years. The instrument is in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition. However I have been unable to achieve a uniform level of illumination across the field of view. The illumination bulb can be seen and it’s very evident th...

Re: American Optical 110 microscope switch
You understand right. I have looked at the service manual but it doesn’t give a value for the potentiometer. If I knew the value I would order a replacement. Thank you for your idea about using cleaning fluids. I had not thought of trying that.

American Optical 110 microscope switch
I have 2 AO 110 microscopes. Switch works on both. One powers up on low intensity and will not increase in intensity. The other one powers up at the highest level and will not decrease—hard on bulbs. I am looking for 2(two) switches for my scopes. Any help will be great! Thank you!

Re: Illumination for series 20 dark phase contrast
I used a regular 10x to center up the apertures of the AO series 20 and used the phase objectives and anulli in the turret for phase.

Illumination for series 20 dark phase contrast
Almost a year ago I purchased a nice series 20 by American Optical. Over time I purchased the correct accessories for dark phase operation. I have gone through the manual and set everything up according to factory recommendations. Using a 10x bright fielld objective and no filters in the carousel I ...

What am I seeing?
I purchased a set of bacterial slides from Amscope, 10 slides in all. Anthrax, tetanus, botulism, tuberculosis, etc. In viewing these slides through the microscope I am seeing numerous small objects and some larger crystalline looking objects. I am assuming the small objects are the bacteria, but wh...

Re: AO phase condensers
Phil,
Would it be feasible to swap out a dovetail from another condenser that fits an AO110 and put it on a 1240? I figure that I can find a dovetail easier than I can find a 1201.

AO phase condensers
What is the difference between the AO phase condensers cat# 1201 and cat# 1240? Are they the same with just a different cat#? Will a cat# 1240 work on an AO110 for phase microscopy?

Re: cheap microscope for identifying soil life?
I am a newbie here so my opinion doesn't carry much weight. With regard to observing bacteria through a microscope, my results have not been promising. Bacteria are small requiring high power in order to view. This means the images will not have the clarity produced by lower power objectives. Bacter...

How important is the right eyepiece?
I recently purchased an American Optical 110 microscope at what I consider a good deal. It arrived with cat#145 eyepiece. I noticed that the instrument originally was marketed with cat #180 eyepieces. Will I notice a difference between the two?

Re: Fine Focus Problem
Sir, You are correct in your assessment of the problem. I had time to take the fine focus knobs off both sides of the microscope stand. There was grease on the washer, the spring washer, the acrylic washer, and the knob and screw. I cleaned the grease off and re-greased the parts with a synthetic gr...

Re: Fine Focus Problem
Dear Sir, Thank you for your advice. I had a little time to work on the microscope today. I was not able to get the fine focus working as it should. However, I noticed that the fine focus knob worked well when I lifted the nose piece. I am now thinking that maybe the problem is within the part that ...

Fine Focus Problem
I recently purchased a American Optical Series 10 microscope for my daughter. The fine focus knob on the right side works as intended. The fine focus knob on the left side appears to slip. There must be a clutch or some type of mechanism connecting the two knobs. I think I can fix it but would like ...
