Re: Moss leaves in glycerin: how to prevent cells from collapsing?
I also wonder if at the stage of total infiltration (with glycerin) a glycerin gel may be employed - giving a solid mount that may even be sealed for permanence/longevity? Let us know how you get along.... I made a lot of permanent slides of plant stems with glycerin gel so far they have lasted abo...

Re: Snakeskin specimen
I thought of placing the specimen in isopropyl alcohol directly. Guess that would not do the skin good so i will follow the fish scale technique. As i have enough of the specimen i will try to mount it in Entellan, canada balsam and glycerin jelly. The glycerin jelly will be a challang as it require...

Snakeskin specimen
I have recently acuired a snakeskin specimen, but could not find any information on how to process it for permanent slide making.. Has anyone made a snakeskin slide before? I will try different chemical to soften it a bit as it is a bit older. Will keep you posted on this if anyone is interested.

Embeding problem, glycerine jelly update and stain sensitivety.
Hello So i tried to embed the stem of Petroselinum crispum in paraffin wax, it did not work as the wax did not penetrate the cells so the stem shrunk after a while. I did fixate it in achohol then embeded it. What do i need to soak (fix) the specimen in to get a nice embedment i would like to keep t...

As far as I know you have to do something against fungus development when using glycerin gelantine for long term slides.

Re: Glycerin jelly permanent mounting
I have had some glycerin jelly I made sitting in my lab frig for years now. Very little discoloration. Although I may see some slight signs of microbial growth. LOL Never got around to using it. I was trying a different preservative which has worked incredibly. Which one did you use, if i may ask?

Re: Glycerin jelly permanent mounting
The method is to include a very small amount of 'disinfectant' in the formula, I used 'Lysterine' with very good results indeed when I was experimenting with glycerin jelly mounts. Here's a link to a post re glycerin jelly.. It is your post that inspired me to try it. The thing is i dont know how t...

How small do you need the instrument to be for your purposes? I have several smaller multi objective microscopes I collected over the years because of their exceptional optical quality , with an eye to using them as field scopes. My requirements kept changing over time and I now am in the latter st...

This is a type of measuring microscope. It is used mainly to be set upon an opaque object in order to examine some details or measure some details by use of an included reticle. Usually some sort of illumination source needs to be shone against the built in white semi-circular reflector, at the bot...

Hi Petar, welcome to the forum! When you can get along withou a binocular tube you gain a much wider range of nice microscopes to choos from, liky your two. Welcome. True "rust" is iron oxides and carbonate, formed by corrosion of iron-containing metal surfaces. If found on the stage, I would suspect that the scope has been exposed to solutions of common salt (NaCl) or other chlorides. Superficial rust can be removed by covering with dilute phosphoric ...
