Re: Wanted: Olympus BH2-BHS (or similar BH2, etc.)

Hello AALT
Where are you located?
I have a BHS with S-plan objectives plus phase kit but I'd prefer not to post.

Re: Slider for Motic BA310

Thanks, I am a little bit confused so I made a drawing: DF.jpg If I understand well, r1=11mm, I couldn't figure out r2 r3 and r4 from your previous message. I also have the central orange light issue but it goes away when I up the condenser to the max. You opened the condenser iris to the max right...

Re: Slider for Motic BA310

Awesome, may I bother you with the inner and outer diameters of the darkfield stop light hole? 22mm & 28mm. The stop is 26.5mm (there's a very fine piece of wire holding it in place) I'm getting more of a darkfield effect now but I'm seeing an unwanted circular patch of yellow colour. The condenser...

Hope this helps...

Re: Slider for Motic BA310

Hi David, So this is my understanding: Darkfield relies on light that hits the objects not from below but from the sides. So it doesn't really work for prepared slides that are perfectly flat. Things need to be 3 dimensional (I use it for pond life). Also, you need to fully open the condenser's iri...

Re: Slider for Motic BA310

Thanks both, The condenser was set up for kohler illumination but I have raised the condenser to the top (it was almost at the top anyway). The video starts with the slider at its brightfield stop, then I move the slider to the darkfield position, when the image is completely lost (black) then graua...

Re: Slider for Motic BA310

What do you mean by the effect is barely noticeable? Do you mean the background is not dark but grey? At what magnification do you work at? Those condensers will do dark field until 20x well, 40x sometimes and won't do anything above. Have you centered your condenser? I mean that when the slider is...

Re: Slider for Motic BA310

I have the Motic slider in your link. I may be doing something wrong, but I'm not that impressed. When the slider 'clicks' into place, the darkfield effect is barely noticeable. I have to move the slider out of its 'correct' position to see any effect, and then the contrast is not what I hoped for. ...

Re: Swift 380T + dslr adapter

If the first image is what you see through the eyepieces, then I would suggest there is something wrong with your setup, not related to camera/imaging.
I would expect to see much clearer, sharper images through the eyepieces.

Re: Depth of field

I have been coveting Splan apo's, but as most of my observations involve 3D specimens, not so much now. The shallow depth of field also imposes stringent setup requirements, which can be challenging. Yet high magnification coupled with high numerical aperture (NA) is where the fine details are reve...

Re: Depth of field

It’s somewhat counterintuitive, but the higher the power of the objective, the greater the depth-of-focus (at the film/sensor plane) even though the depth-of-field (at the subject plane) decreases dramatically. Indeed. I have been coveting Splan apo's, but as most of my observations involve 3D spec...

Yep, that is an inescapable optical property.
You can read more about the relationship between NA and depth of field here:

Good information, thank you.

Depth of field

I have been using a Motic BA310 with Motic's standard plan lenses. The 10x objective (for purpose of comparison) has an NA of 0.25. I have recently aquired an Olympus BHS with Splan oblectives. The NA of the Splan 10x is 0.30. Comparing the two, I notice that the resolution of the Olympus is greater...

Re: Trinocular Projection Lenses for DSLRs

I think you may have chosen the one area where it’s questionable, David ... Most of the Nikon image looks much crisper to me, and I would posit that your sampled area is simply out-of-focus on the Nikon image [the rest of it being sufficiently good to make that obvious ... which is not the case on ...

Re: Trinocular Projection Lenses for DSLRs

In the woody stem example there is a lot more detail in the generic objective than the Nikon.
In the second example (lily, non-parfocal) there is more detail with the Nikon than the generic.
Suggesting another variable (like focus) needs to be eliminated for an effective comparison.

Re: Photo tube adapter

Surely Motic makes a standard (ocular) 23.3mm eyepiece that could be used with the Celestron. Have you asked about that? If they don’t, an Amscope or other modern Chinese made eyepiece is likely to give acceptable results. (No worse than the generic optics LabCam provides.) There's this one....? ht...

Thanks John yes I understand but the dovetail on the top of the U-spt is 37mm and fits perfectly into th eMotic photo port (37.5mm approx).

Hi, I wonder if this item would take you from the photoport (in your 1st posted image) to a c-mount to 'start-off' camera access? If Motic designed their camera adapter in the same way that most other manufacturer's do, then yes, inserting the LabCam there should work.
