Re: Looking for a NICE dust cover
I found a place online that makes outdoor covers for grills and furniture, and also had a heavy clear material for taxi seat covers. Looks very nice. Could you give a link to the company? If postage to my place would be reasonable I am interested. However, the cover pattern/cutting instructions wou...

Thanks, another question:
What about the movement of the organelles inside the yeast cells? Is that brownian movement as well or rather a result of cellular function and metabolism? Or both?bodies that are undergoing more rapid brownian movement

My question: what are the small, round and fast moving objects between the yeast cells? If you look at DIC images of yeast they are maybe the best you could dream for:

Re: Tools for dissecting really tiny spiders and insects
I used micro spring scissors for dissecting. I purchased mine from here https://www.finescience.com/en-US/Produ ... ors?pg=all
You may also find them in Ebay for much less price. However I don't know about the quality.

Re: Nikon Diaphot project
I have a PDF of exploded diagrams, not sure it would be helpful but if you want it I can send a link to you. Yes, It would be nice to have anyway. Please, send it. You may not need to disassemble it. Just soak the whole thing in solvent, then re-lubricate externally (let lubricant drip in). That is...

Nikon Diaphot x-y stage control needs cleaning and relubrication. However, I don't know how to disassemble this handle. Has anyone done this and could give some hints how to take this apart?

Re: Making glass knives from microscope slides
I have done this a lot. However, I have always used glass strips specifically made for EM ultra microtomy. You first cut a square and then divide it half to make two triangles. You may use an ordinary glass knife and pliers to get a reasonable good quality knife for light microscopy. There seems to ...

Re: Leitz Orthoplan - How to adjust focus tension?
I recommend total disassembly, mineral spirit and toothbrush/wipes, lubrication and reassembly for the x-y stage. I have done that myself and it is not a big job. Old heated lubricant may stuck again later or does not work as it should lubricating the surfaces. For iris diaphragm I have immersed the...

Re: Leitz Orthoplan - How to adjust focus tension?
We are talking about oil only if you have the focus block opened. There is no way to get oil inside Orthoplan focus block without taking it off the stand. This may, in turn, lead to collimation problems. Xylene is only used when the focus block is completely serviced. That means all the parts will b...

The tube (in your picture) might be originally for another type of epi illuminator nosepiece. My tube is 76,5mm of total lenght. If the length is ok you may use it with ploemopak.

Re: Help with decision on Leitz Orthoplan
I have just a simple tube. In your tube in the picture there is probably an iris diaphragm. Maybe useful in some applications. Ploemopak has its own diaphragm. The tube will prevent light scattering. The diffusion filter makes the lightning more even and important with many more primitive lightning ...

Re: Leitz Orthoplan - How to adjust focus tension?
Try pouring a tiny amount of mineral spirits around the focus knob, David. You may get lucky. I don't think it will penetrate inside. In the similar situation I would probably take the focusing block out of the stand and add some lubricant e.g. WD40 into the coarse focusing parts. This might work f...

I don't know if you Phaco objectives would work well. I would guess the phaco ring would do some harm for the light intensity. Not sure what will happen, never tried myself.

Re: Help with decision on Leitz Orthoplan
Sorry, I didn't realize there are some filters. Be careful with the mercury lamp as I think it may be even more dangerous if used with transient light.Your Orthoplan is already configured for transient light fluorescence.

Well, you have a very nice high quality scope. Now collecting parts and accessories will start and probably will cost at least double the price of the scope anyway :) Here are some suggestions how to construct led lighting for fluorescence https://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php...

Re: Help with decision on Leitz Orthoplan
There are both lamp houses in your pictures. If you use fluorescence, you need a ploemopak with filter cubes. I highly recommend led conversion. The focus block in Orthoplan is very complicated and is a problem IF it needs servicing. If focus turns smoothly, no problem. These are good reading, you w...

After about 5 years of experience with Orthoplan: It is a very high quality scope with plenty of objectives and parts available in Ebay. However, DIC parts are extremely rare and hard to find (I don't have myself). It is a rather large stand and not easily portable so it needs lot of space. I do mos...

Leitz filter cube numbering
I have found three data sheets describing Leitz filter cube specifications and have the following information H3: BP 420-490 RKP 510 LP 520 K3: BP 470-490 RKP 510 LP 520 K2: extremely narrow band blue at 495 nm It appears that K2 information is only available in the oldest(?) datasheet. And accordin...

Re: Questions about Zeiss objectives on a Olympus microscope
I always put oil on the slide and then turn the nose piece. Just some fine-focusing after that. No mess at all. Though I think the other way is more professional, I have found this quick and easy and most comfortable for me.

Re: Embedding cheese for slicing
If you are able to freeze your microtome, making cryo sections sounds an excellent method to try. Some thoughts: You may freeze your microtome in the freezer (a few hours may be ok) and then try to keep it cold during your work by wrapping most part of it into some plastic foam. It would perhaps be ...
