Leitz NPL Fluotar 50x/1.00 oel 160/- It's gooey with oil; an ebay novice was evidently breaking up an Ortholux. Meaning of Red dot on a Leitz eyepiece?

I have one which is a high eyepoint, which I believe means it's for afocal photography - is that right?

A second is on a plain-looking Leitz Wetzlar Periplan GF 10x eyepiece. What does the red dot on that mean?
I know GF is wide field.

Gypsum is just a convenient material for a full wave plate, as mica was for quarter wave plates. The standard thickness was 25µ but the retardation is proportional to thickness. I can't think what equipment to slice up, grind and polish rocks wouldn't be very large compared with this microscope. Also, it's a time-consuming business. The case is about 24 x 20 x 10 cm. Perhaps it would be for looking at insulation materials, etc. Otherwise why make it portable? It could be us...
