Hello everyone,
A big help would be reposting spam posts by clicking the small report button (like many of you have done before). It is then easier for me to remove them.

Spam Messages and registration of new users
I just removed a large number of spam messages. In order to reduce the registrations of fake accounts and spam, I recently changed the registration from the security questions to an image with numbers that users have to type in. This did not work well and the number of spam messages increased faster...

New Microscopy Wiki!
Dear Microscopy Community! There is so much knowledge about microscopy in the community. I have started a Wiki where we can collect microscopy-related information and links: http://www.microbehunter.com/wiki/ Sometimes old forum posts get lost "in history" or can not be easily found anymore and a Wi...

Dear Microscopy Enthusiasts, I just want to inform you, that I have now implemented so-called "SSL encryption" to this forum. The functionality does not change, but the data is now encrypted automatically between you and my web host, where this forum is installed. When you look at the address bar of...

Re: How to make Insect w.m. Microscope Slide
W.M. stands for "Whole Mount". The whole specimen is in mounting medium. Good only for small insects or insect parts. Put insect in alcohol to dehydrate and then into Euparal mounting medium. If this is not available, place insect into acetone for some time and then try mounting with clear nail poli...

Re: DSLR photography
you need a dslr adapter with optics. the image must be picked up there where the objective projects it (1cm down the tube). If not, then you need to refocus the microscope, which results in the objective not operating at the ideal distance and lower image quality. dslr adapters without optics (prime...

I would contact someone from Olympus. The phase annuli of the condenser and the phase rings have to match as well.

Re: Canon EOS DSLR to 23.2mm adapter
Watch this video, where I tested a DSLR adapter: https://youtu.be/Ju8rgeJr3bI The one with the optics is better, because it can give you mostly a parfocal image. It will pick up the image from inside the tube. The one without optics will introduce extra empty magnification and it is not parfocal, be...

Re: Identification Help
Hello, Please no medical talk on this forum. I want to provide a justification for this rule. First, it is impossible to diagnose illnesses like this using microscopy. The shape of blood cells says nothing about health and any irregular or unusual shapes can be explained by artifacts. For medical ad...

Re: DIC prism purchasing
Hello, This is not an easy thing. According to Olympus (I talked to them), they only provide DIC with plan Apos. The non-plan are not certified for DIC, so maybe they would still work? You need a DIC condenser and a Wollasone Prism and depending on the system you might need a separate prism for each...

Re: What happened to the Microbe Hunter magazine?
Sorry for the late reply, but thank you for asking. Yes, the last issue was back in 2017 and one reason why I (temporarily?) stopped making the magazine was becasue I had somewhat of a difficulty in obtaining articles. There were several microscopists who were submitting articles on a regular basis ...

Re: Bubbles in drying mountant
While I do not know this mountant, I suggest that you try to de-gas it somehow by applying a vacuum. Maybe air was mixed into the medium during transport (shaking) and this one might form bubbles during drying. If the medium shrinks during drying, then this can also cause bubbles. I suggest then to ...

Re: Phase contrast objectives
The phase plate in the objective will reduce the resolution somewhat. But I think that there are other factors that can outweigh the loss of quality (dust, mounting medium etc).... A wrong condenser aperture setting will also reduce the resolution and I still often use it, because I get a larger dep...

Re: Phase contrast vs. Brightfield
Go for brightfield first. It is cheaper and once you are more experienced, you can always invest in a more expensive one later. Phase contrast is significantly more expensive. Phase contrast is nice for sure, but it is also not suitable for all specimens. If you use filters than you can get a lot ou...

Re: Help Identify Gram Negative Cocci Please

For identification of the bacteria, you need to do either a DNA study or a biochemical analysis of the ...

Re: Darkfield using Olympus BH2/BHS
Hello, 1. Check if the condenser has a push on filter holder (and not a swing out type). The filter holder sometimes contains a blue glass filter. The patch stop goes on top of the blue glass. 2. If you do not have a filter holder at all, then make yourself a patch stop using overhead foil. Tape it ...

Re: Can't find an answer on what these black lines could be?
Hello,
Had similar lines on my slide. Try to clean the slide first before use by dry-rubbing it with a paper towel. Could be some stuff left over from the slide-manufacturing process.
greets, Oliver.

Re: Olympus BH2 - AFocal vs projection eyepiece?
Hi,
in my setup I project it directly into the camera, but there is the problem of stray light (and thus lower contrast) if you do not have Koehler illumination. So this might be seen as another advantage for the afocal setup.
Oliver.

Re: Olympus BH2 - AFocal vs projection eyepiece?
Hello, The NFK projection eyepieces are so-called compensating eyepieces. This means that they correct lens errors (aberrations) that are still present from the objective. The NFK eyepieces are designed to project the image diretly on flat photographic film or sensor. They are not designed for afoca...

Re: How is this not DIC? Oblique illumination? HOW?
Oblique illumination - several points: 1. Not all specimens will produce a good result. To test it, I would try to make leaf-impressions with glue and then observe the glue, because this worked fine for me. White glue on bottom side of leaf, let it dry, peel it off, observe it. Stomata should be vis...
