Re: WTB Nikon Plan ED 1x stereo microscope objective.
There are a couple on eBay under 250 dollars. Not bad for an objective of this quality. Trouble is I'm in the U.K. - I suppose there would be V.A.T. to add at the very least, but also the 'import taxes' whatever that means these days... Ideally I need a U.K. seller, but thanks for the info scaro'.

Hi, I'm looking for a Nikon ED Plan 1x objective (for a Nikon SMZ 10A stereo microscope) if anyone knows of or has one.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Really nicely-done! I've been following along this interesting thread and must say your 'scope looks mighty-fine in that last image.
Looks like you've most certainly achieved and of course learnt an awful lot. Very interesting and very well done.

Re: Microscope requirements for botany
Hello Tom, in my experience of dissecting and mounting moss and liverworts at the macro and microscopic levels I would 100% answer that you need both a compound and a stereo 'scope to fully explore the details. Taxonomic detail as you mention can quite often go into leaf-cell arrangement and/or shap...

Looks fine to me, the ones I used like that had an insert in the cap - just a simple circle of what looked like a thin fine-foam pad.

Re: Containers for FAA fixed plants
Plastic cap and either glass or plastic container - must be airtight, which is more likely with softer platic caps - e.g. the harder bakelite-like screwcaps don't sit airtight without a sealing pad of some kind. Exact-same applies to storing FAA - I used plastic bottles with plastic caps. https://lh...

Wow! What a fabulous gift!
They are beautiful and I suspect a real joy in use, nice to see how you get on with these as you explore their capabilities.
Congratulations.

Re: I'm trying to troubleshoot this issue.
Regrettably … Yes My micro 4/3 camera shows-up dust specks much more on the microscope than it does with the normal lens attached. MichaelG. I have found this to be the case also - with a Canon 200D used through 'scope with all the 'proper' Olympus optics a few speck ALWAYS showed-up. From (bitter)...

Re: safranin and toluidine blue solution prep
Many thanks Leonard. Is there an alternative to Fast Green FCF ? Would Light Green SF work similarly since I dont plan to make permanent mounts ? I dont know how quick it fades. There's a very good one - Alcian-Blue. For high-res high-mag detail I go for FG as it's more inclined to stain with delic...

Re: Intensifier filter
Didymium filters are very useful indeed - I have a number of Olympus filters that I use/d with my BX40 and 50 'scopes. The FF Didymium (I think they're used with fluorescence also?) is a beautiful filter that combined with for example a red stain such as Safranin (about the most often used red stain...

OLYMPUS FOR SALE - retiring from microscopy.
Hi all, it's with great regret in many ways, and after a lot of careful consideration, that I've decided to hang-up my microscopy hat (at least as far as any more practical work or slide-making is concerned).... So, the up-shot of this decision is that I'm offering a LOT of top-quality equipment for...

I'm pretty surprised just how close the dry image is to the immersion. Incidentally the globular-looking red-stained substance is I think a globular-form of tannin , very often seen in my slides too, in varying stages of formation and deposition within plant cells. Protective (against herbivory I th...

Very interesting, a method I've never even heard of. It clearly in this case and of course many others yet to be seen, works very well indeed with a huge increase in contrast between the colours in the quartz patch. The yellow and rust/purple really do contrast well. The purplish of the quart patch ...
