Re: Phytoplankton

Thanks @MRSONCHUS. There were more but the Forum would only accept 5 images. I'll see if I can attach some more to this reply. Cochlodinium was the most prevalent.

Phytoplankton

A recent phytoplankton bloom in the Monterey Bay. I gathered a sample with a homemade net made from some 10 µm mesh. Here are a few photos from the collection

Re: I just bought a new stereo microscope

Don said: The stereo scope is a lot of fun to look through but I'm having trouble finding a real use for it. What do people use these thimgs for? I use mine constantly. One of my main uses is to locate interesting things in a water sample. I then move the subject to my compound microscope for a clos...

Re: Looking for advice on choosing my first microscope

I’ve been playing in this arena for a couple of years. My journey sounds similar. I suspect that many of us started in the same place, lost. I’ll start by answering your main question. Yes, you can purchase decent microscopes at your budget. I’ve heard the arguments that a used “big four” microscope...

Re: Stephanoceros fimbriatus ssp. millsii

The pond was created in 1908 when the San Vicente Lumber Company flooded a section of Newell Creek to create a holding pond for logs at their sawmill. The sawmill closed in 1923. After 1923 the land around the pond was used for a variety of purposes, mostly agricultural. In 1982 the property was don...

Stephanoceros fimbriatus ssp. millsii

I thought I would share images of an interesting rotifer I observed. I don't think it is "rare" but it appears to be infrequently documented. I found a few North American observations and a couple papers from Asia. I post to iNaturalist and my observations are the only ones. I don't post here often ...

Re: My Microscope

Hi Phil, Looks like a nice piece of equipment. Congratulations. I recently added a compound microscope to my setup. A more basic Amscope product, T340. I'm very happy with the images I am getting. It seems like a good match to my beginner skill set. At my pricepoint Amscope has several models with n...

Re: Just Received my Hayear HY500B camera

I've been using that same camera (also purchased from Hayear) on my stereo microscope since April 2019. I just purchased a second one for my new compound microscope. It's a great camera , especially considering the low cost. Nice to have a solid camera on my photo port rather than trying to make a m...

My stereo setup

My microscope is a fairly standard, Chinese, stereo-zoom, trinocular device. It is essentially an industrial inspection microscope on a boom stand. Although not typical for biologic applications the boom stand provides a lot of flexibility to view objects of different sizes. The microscope came with...

Re: Hello from Santa Cruz, California

Hi @PeteM,
I did not work at Kinetic Labs. I worked at Plantronics for 16 years spread over three periods. The rest of my career was working on medical ultrasound imaging at Acuson and Siemens.

Hello from Santa Cruz, California

I am new to microscopy, at least for living things. I retired in 2016 from a career in engineering/physical science. Since retiring I have turned my focus to study of the living world. I am a docent and lead naturalist hikes in local state parks (we are blessed with many nearby). I am also a docent ...
