Egg Shell Fiber

Egg shells have an inner layer of knotted fiber and an outer layer of solid crystal excretion. I examined the inner lining layer. These layers are discernable through the microscope viewed at high power. The fibers are hard to see. because they are extremely thin and they congeal together. https://y...

Very Dense Biofilm

The water is full of very small organisms that pack the water and dim the image. Because of a previous experiment some of the image is clouded--the lens needs cleaning, But I would say this is a microbe chaos.

A Hairy Leaf

This plant growing in the lawn has a deep textured surface with a lot of hair-like projections. The cells are complex. The leaf also exudes chemical fumes which cloud the microscope image with close exposure, so high magnifications do not make clear images. I exposed the microscope objectives to che...

Another Day

Moving among lumps of biofilm in the syrupy water medium, a variety of protists keep reproducing happily. This is the original biofilm sample I have been maintaining all winter, now into early spring. I will be adding new water samples as soon as I can find a natural water source in this suburban la...

Denizens of the Biofilm

Solid matter suspended in the biofilm has made the medium into a kind of syrup. There is a variety of protists in the water as always. I continue to add new vegetable matter nutrient. I still don't see much in the way protist eating protist activity.

A Pink Flower with Big Cells

This lovely flower is growing in the lawn. I violated a trust and pulled a petal from the flower. Close-up, at hundreds of times magnification, these pretty flowers have a special intimate beauty.

A Generous Mudpuddle Bounty

It's not that I breed these little things but I did invite them and encouraged them--my fundamental neighbors. These are the beings that inhabit my mudpuddles. I wish I could say more about them, but they are silent in their ordinariness.

Thin Slice of Carrot

I cut a piece of carrot into thin horizontal slices and examined the top and bottom of a slice. I saw thick, irregular cells. The tops of the cells appeared to be more closed--with cells closer together--than the cells seen from below. https://youtu.be/RauvsppoDck Carrot Cells: macro view. When comp...

Heavier Forms on the Fringe

In the center of the biofilm but resting on the bottom of the jar (the densist part) is a special group of heaviest life forms. They don't move much and I can't really tell if they represent anything distinct, except that they are heaviest.

Steady State Biome

A thick biofilm sits on top of the water in the biome. The residents of the biome are soaked in nutrients and show their contentment by resting still. The water is jelly-like. It lakes time to refresh the sample since I am entertained by change not stability. In the biome, stability means death. htt...

A Messy Mudpuddle Sample

I took a mixed-up sample from the mudpuddle biome this moning. That sample is undergoing interesting changes. The water is filled with very tiny (bacteria-sized) fast-moving organisms. The appear to be circular but they move very fast and I can't see them that well. Then there are the familiar small...

So What If the Damn Poem Didn't Get Published

Let's face it, Goddah doesn't have time to take care of all you rascals by herself. She doesn't even manufacture you little insects by herself anymore. She has machines to do it. Of course, what did you think? There are piles of you in cardboard boxes scattered in untended fields all over the univer...

Thinning Out and Transformation

This particular biome seems to be undergoing a lot of growth and change. There is an undercurrent of very small and fast moving organisms superimposed on the larger protist population. The range of species is large. Many of them are not familiar. At the same time the biofilm is thinning out--organic...

Structure in a Rotten Apple Core Now Dried

When the decaying apple tissue is allowed to dry overnight the cell structure that clearly remains becomes much more visible. The surface skin of the apple is a very durable structure.

Structure in a Rotten Apple Core

This may be careless speculation. Today I examined the tissue of a rotted apple core. Everything about it is speculation. I can see demarcation-like lines in the structure which may be the remains of a cell structure, but can also be random folds. The decayed tissue of the apple has optical properti...

Surface Water over a Busy Biofilm

The population of the biofilm has become more diverse, both in terms of species and size of organisms. A number of tiny circular organisms buzz quickly through the biofilm and larger protists leisurely slide over the water. The biofilm has clumped. It is denser and smaller. In bunches on the surface...

Leaf Under Attack from Organic Activity

The bacteria and protist activity in the biofilm have modified the cellular structure in the leaf. The natural cell structure is hardly visible now because the organic activity has destroyed the cell walls or deeply modified them. To be honest I can't tell how much of this distortion is simply optic...

Re: What Does It Mean To Say One Ciliate Eats Another

I love your photos. Your practice is probably much like mine. A year ago I had to move because my friends with whom I live decided to move to a better apartment. I am just rebuilding my life on a slightly smaller scale. I used to rent a larger basement space but had to move to a smaller (but nicer) ...
