Re: Microscopes in use at the Star Party
Thank you Bob . I wanted to buy a Zeiss binocular stereo 'scope accessory a few years ago but someone beat me to it … Was hoping it might be compatible with a Leica 8x20 binocular . I have the Jon Larson book and tried harvesting micro meteorites … but was unsuccessful with resultant sludge samples....

Microscopes in use at the Star Party
My local astronomical society hosts public star parties where we cater for inclement weather by arranging indoor displays of telescopes, binoculars and meteorite specimens … latter examined through various low magnification microscopes I've acquired various low-mag instruments for use at star partie...

Re: 1923 Leitz Travelling Microscope
ancient low mag. simple dissecting microscopes which are useful for examining e.g. meteorite specimens at public star parties Interesting use of these instruments! I have been wondering for a while whether they still had a use today. Often new designs replace older ones and it is no longer in view ...

Re: 1923 Leitz Travelling Microscope
Again a very beautiful microscope in great condition! I like the fine focu knob with scale in plated metal and the roundeg knurls everywhere. These are really nice to grip, smooth and still with a lot of puchase. This type of knurling is long gone, the bombed knurling wheels difficult to obtain tod...

Re: 1923 Leitz Travelling Microscope
These brass parts were painted with a stained shellac. This doesn't hold up too well under the influence of sweat and abrasion an the microscopes start to look really used after a while. When they are put out of use the plain polished brass starts to discolour. And when such an istrument gets in th...

1923 Leitz Travelling Microscope
One from my collection which I've never used … and judging by the condition, unlikely the original owner used it very much either. At the time this microscope was sold, the Ernst Leitz directors were undecided whether or not to commence production of the first Leica camera but 31 Leica '0' series pr...

Re: dunk in Peterborough UK
When current c'virus emergency ends plan to sample diatoms at local nature reserves. Thought you were lamenting the lack of collecting opportunity due to the quarantine. Look forward to seeing photos of your microscopes when you find the time upload them. Just posted a couple of photos of a 1923 vi...

Re: dunk in Peterborough UK
Hi Dunk, welcome Diatoms can be found just about anywhere that there is standing water, so a ditch, pond, fountain or plant pot overflow tray are all viable options. Do post photos of your microscopes in the My microscope section. We all like to see them! Aware diatoms are everywhere … Interested i...

Re: dunk in Peterborough UK
Welcome aboard, dunk. There's an incredible knowledgebase here to tap into. Do you have a compound already and any particular subjects you hope to view? If you have a compound scope already, what do you have? Happy with it? Currently exploring phase contrast & just acquired a Reichert Neopan with 3...

Re: Biolam phase contrast set compatibility?
Thank you PeteM … Possible that the Lumax stand might originate from the same factory as Fisher Micromaster. I do not have any machining facilities. My best bet is to find a Biolam instrument … Zeiss, including vintage Zeiss Jena are likely outside my budget.

Biolam phase contrast set compatibility?
Advice required please:
I have a Biolam 4 objective phase contrast set inc. telescope.
Is the Lomo phase contrast condenser originally designed for Biolam ‘scopes, compatible with current Zenith Lumax/ Ultra / Microlab series of microscopes?
Thank you.
