Re: How to prepare and preserve tardigrades on a slide
Interesting. I think this is the full pdf downloadable... The chloral hydrate puts a stop on the Hoyer's formula here in the U.K. that's for sure - an alternative must be out-there though? Hey the link doesn't work can you maybe share it again? Lets see if these links work,,, Published in : Zoologi...

Yeast and sugar in warm water in a suitable bottle with a pipeline to the fly chamber, or use another inverted water-filled bottle over water bath to collect the displacing gas. CO2 being heavier than air it can be poured from a filled bottle** into the fly chamber (through a mesh top) PS If using m...

I think Hypotrichia vulpinarius (John Peel 1869) was later assigned Hypotrichia vulpio (Seeleye Span 1989) aka sly or crafty fox.

Re: The best Camera for Photomicrography
Most, maybe all, Canon cameras have optical anti-alias filters (the dslrs that I am familiar with do) to limit the high frequency content reaching the sensor. I dont know about Nikon, some manufacturers have moved away from them. I guess the Rising is a raw sensor ? No real world filter can perfectl...

Thanks.

They say Armstrong et.al. got to the moon with less computing power than in a ZX81,
we know there are tardigrades on the moon ,
Now we know what [s]computers[/s] bio-engineering they used to get there

How to annoy a group of Halteria - trap them ! or, to announce in the Victorian style : A bagatelle of Halteria in which a possible avoidance mechanism is observed. Bruce was kind enough to identify these charming little creatures for me. (so charming that I have elevated them to be my microPet #2, ...

While watching rotifers from the water in the tray of an outdoor plant this active little thing hove into view, and promptly jumped back out of view ! There followed a merry chase for quite some time until I could get it in focus (sometimes!) Best I could do was let it jump about in and out of focus...

Welcome Jody, from me too, thanks for raising this post, as it happens my thoughts were also turning to external power for my canon 60D and if, or not, I should continue using my pride&joy camera for continuous live view microscopy. So both of DaveS' thoughts are interesting, two questions arise : (...

Thanks for all the helpful advice offered, it has born fruit ! I have my first rotifers. I learned how to edit in VirtualDub* and how to assemble into a movie, complete with some titles...

Here is a beautiful CTS Universal. Love the , probably Mahogany , armrests. Very nice, and its state of polish ! It looks like it has had a better state of captivity than the one I inherited, but to be fair I think, in its early years, mine would have been much treasured, it is just that in its rec...

Re: Swift 380 40x + NDPL2 samples
Thank you.
Found a ref (in German) for Lepocinclis fusca at 15 to 40mm which I guess is microns, so that is good for me to go on.
All we need now is for someone who has the 3/5mp usb Swift cams to come along with some examples

And including price lists from the time, fascinating.
Temporary one in April 45 and a 'proper' one in 48, that tells a story as well.

This, from 1998 mentions a Cooke 45x fluorite: http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/indexmag.html?http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/artsep98/cts.html The 45x fluorite objective was specifically intended for medical workers and described by 'CTS' (ref. 7, p. 105) as 'the ideal lens for examining bl...

Just a thought , might the 40x prob have anything to do with less than perfect enough purity of lineraization ( or whatever the correct term might be ) from the film. If you have spare film might two layers ( aligned not xxed ! ) help the null ?

There is a little diagonal icon in one of the windows. I have never seen a symbol like that before but it looks like it could indicate an oblique setting. The red symbol might be a pol filter. Re: Tardigrades with Polarized Light
For polarized light, I am just using some old camera filters... one on top of the lamp and one on top of the slide. Ah ! Oh ! I had assumed that the dark/light came from the polarizing and that the colour came from Rheinberg type filters in combo with the polarized, (and previously, usually, seen p...

Yes, I had the whole tube in place. But the vignetting was so severe I did not bother taking it any further than that. The NDPL-2 adapter works really well for with the 4x and 10x objectives. I probably will look into other solutions as I start to use the 40x more... I think with the 40x I am notic...
