Re: Hello from San Diego

Greetings and a warm welcome from South Africa and a fellow Amscoper. :D It is indeed interesting to learn how people come to microscopy as a leisure activity from all angles. Quite commonly, one uses a microscope once for some specific task, and then after discovering the wonders of the generally u...

Cannabis trichomes

Greetings. Here are two pics of the trichomes on one of the so-called sugar leaves which grows inside the flowering mass (or the cola) on the cannabis plant. Growers consider the state of these trichomes as a harvest indicator. The micrographs show the three major stages, as the trichomes pass throu...

If the floaters only manifest whilst working at the eyepiece, how about switching to the live view on a monitor instead? Microscopy may well be moving in that direction anyway.

An interesting comparison. It's good to know that the time spent slathering the objective in oil is well worth it. 8-)

Re: Hello from the West Coast USA

Welcom gconcepcion ! I also have a surplus microscope that I'm looking to convert to LED. The scope is a small, basic Chinese monocular of uncertain pedigree, but its optics yield a surprisingly pleasant view. I want to convert it from 220V AC tungsten filament to 12V LED. If I can pull it off, the ...

Hi Randy and welcome. I'm sure you'll be happy with your scope. I've recently bought a similar Amscope which I suspect shares the same optical train, and I've only had joy so far.

Experiments must follow the "Scientific Method" to be valid... Just random dabbling with something will prove nothing... BillT Perhaps, but often useful discoveries are made this way. Sometimes even accidentally. So, for example, has my dabbling in marriage led to marvelous and awesome discoveries ...

Goldfish scale

Greetings. Attached is a pic of a scale from an olive colored fingerling goldfish, which I examined under the microscope. The colour giving cells (chromatophores) are mostly black octopus-like ones (melanophores) and the yellow xanthophores. Also visible are iridophores containing plates of iridesce...

Welcome snowbear. A cheap 25W aquarium heater may also persuade some critters to hang around longer than they normally would. Something like this in your jar, set to maybe 26 deg C. https://www.amazon.com/Uniclife-Submersible-Aquarium-HT-2025-Thermometer/dp/B076F2771G ETA: I had a look at the review...

Limited by the poor exchange rate of the ZAR, I did a lot of homework before settling on this trinocular LED Amscope. I finally got around to testing it out a bit, and am loving it so far. I must still try the oil immersion lens. It came bundled with the a 5MP cmos camera, and software.

That was a fun experiment, and I too remember it from secondary school. The principles underlying the colours are used to its full extent in the analytical field of atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), where instruments are sensitive enough to make even quantitative analysis, sometimes of a mixture...

Re: Goldfish egg 0 to 4 days

Do you know the size and how soon it might hatch? The egg was about a millimeter in diameter, with the hatchling maybe 5mm. This specific egg hatched after four days at 22 deg C, which is about right according to the internet. I was surprised at how quickly this little vertebrate animal developed, ...

Goldfish egg 0 to 4 days

Hi folks. I've neglected visiting these forums, and the microscope, for some time. But a few days ago something happened that prompted me to pull the Motic stereo out of the naphthalene: one of the comets in the fishpond released her eggs after being chased around by, presumably, two or three males ...

From what I can gather from this genus of algae, conjugation usually occurs when no one is watching. ;)

Re: Spirogyra conjugating

Amazing shots. I remember from high school biology the conjugation of Spirogyra. We examined the algae during the half hour practical session under the school microscopes, but no-one in the class could find any evidence of the two strands going at it. So these are quite a treat.
