Re: A newbie question..why no "Nagler-level"EP's for microscopes?
OK as a very quick/crude experiment Ive just manually held an "OK level" telescope EP ( 70 degree series Explore Scientific 20mm) in place of the Olympus WK 10X 20L on my BHT and obviously there was greater magnification. IMO the view is absolutely, incredibly better than the prescribed Olympus EP. ...

Re: A newbie question..why no "Nagler-level"EP's for microscopes?
Today's better microscope eyepieces have (compared to earlier days) huge (and flat) fields of view, high eye relief, and pay close attention to not introducing aberrations. I don't know enough about telescopes to make a meaningful comparison, but in my (limited) experience might astronomers spend a...

A newbie question..why no "Nagler-level"EP's for microscopes?
It seems like much attention is paid (rightly) to the quality of our objectives, not much so to our eyepieces. In the world of refractor telescopes, much attention is paid to the objective's quality, but as you may know, the world of eyepieces associated with them gains much scrutiny...and rightfull...

1950's AO Spencer #35 binocular scope....worth fixing up?
Ive had this scope for about 20 years and apparently Im the second owner. It has a 4 barrel turret but only two objectives...AO 43X and AO 10x. Has the original 10x eyepieces. No mirror, ancient box light. My BH2/BHT leaves it in the dust so completely that I haven't used it much but it seems a pity...

The common Olympus 1.25 condenser...tips?
It's the only condenser that I have for my BHT.
I'm reading of using oil on condenser/bottom of slide connection.
Does this have a benefit for my Olympus 1.25 condenser?
Thanks in advance!
Terry

Re: Olympus 20x Splan vs 20X Splan APO
Terry, I have both and love the Apo, somehow the “micro-contrast” is preferable to my eyes. Consider it one of the best objectives from the LB era, I even bought a second one for my field CH2 scope (overkill but nice). A color corrected (AAC or SC) condenser helps to get the most out of it. Pond di...

Olympus 20x Splan vs 20X Splan APO
Hello all,
In practical terms, how much would I gain by the extra $$ spent on the Apo version?
Pond water use.....
Many thanks in advance!

Re: Astronomer Considering Microscopy
My two cents? The Olympus BH-2 line of models is very much worth considering. I use the BHT model. These are modular scopes so that they can be customized a bit, and parts are readily available on eBay etc. The optics are great. I too am an amateur astronomer! Well, I am very much impressed! At $38...

Here it is, my first crude attempt! I used my old Samsung S9 focal through my Olympus BHT. DIY Reinberg filters. I used a freeware filter to clean it up a but but the colors aren't enhanced. I can see how this could be addictive! Looking forward to knowing what I'm doing.... https://www.youtube.com/...

Re: Leítz 25x EF. Possibly re-cemented.
Judging from the pic, the lens looks clean with intact coating. The OP says that the views are good. I would definitely not recommend using a solvent on the barrel, since there's too much risk of the adhesive migrating onto the glass! Something like an Exacto #8R knife should chip the substance away...

EASY DIY filter holder for Olympus BH-2
Hello all, Like many I was frustrated by the fact that my BH-2/BHT condenser doesn't feature a filter holder...and so, no way to do dark field patches, Rheinberg filters, etc. The condenser that I have is the most common one, the Abbe 1.25 unit. The section of the condenser body below the iris measu...

Re: Amscope 20x eyepieces....decent??
On most microscopes , 20X eyepieces can only be used with objectives of 20X and under. With the other objectives, if you ignore the decimal in front of the N.A. # , it must be equal to twice the magnification. In other words you would need a 40X .80,. 60X 1.20 etc. Increasing the mag. with eyepiece...

Amscope 20x eyepieces....decent??
I know that you get what you pay for! However, I don't have the $$$ for top-end 20x E.P.'s for my BH-2, and I'd like to expand my range of magnifications via a 20x EP set. I have a mix of SPlan and Zeiss objectives. These are cheap EP's...will the views be anywhere close to those in my stock Olympus...

Thank you for sharing your experience! It is a very interesting report. I feel that I did well going this route rather than a new Chinese 'scope. Re: Will a Nikon Labophot Optiphot trinocular head fit on an Olympus BH-2?
Natively no, the nikon dovetail is 49mm in diameter while the bh2 is 42mm. Rafcamera sells an adapter (https://rafcamera.com/adapter-d48-5-to-dt42mm) for putting nikon s series heads onto olympus bodies, s series have a 48.5mm dovetail and with some dremeling I got it wide enough to accept the 49mm...

Re: Are black, grey, and white the only colors for a scope..or would you want something else?
The amount of finicky disassembly/reassembly required on a microscope for a custom paint job could be prohibitive!
On the other hand, it would allow me to completely service my BH-2 as I went along, thanks to the information provided to us by Alan.

Re: Are black, grey, and white the only colors for a scope..or would you want something else?
My thinking is influenced by my telescope projects over the years. I really enjoy finding a good objective in an abused telescope and "rest-modding" that scope. This almost always includes a custom finish. I'm lucky in that I own an automotive spray booth!! Here's the early 1980's Celestron/Vixen SP...

I think that the right stand would look incredible in a pro-quality circa 1975 Jaguar "British Racing Green". Low-Ish gloss though.
I do like the institutional look.........but a really well done custom paint job....could be cool!
What say you?
