Re: My Zeiss microscope
Thanks, MicroscopyUniverse and einamn, for your nice comments! It is amazing to me that a scope of this age produces such excellent images and mechanically works as it does. A real testament to the quality of Zeiss optics and craftsmanship.

The tube-dwelling ciliate Stichotricha
The ciliated protist shown in the video is Stichotricha. It lives in a tube or lorica and contracts into this lorica when disturbed. While only a single individual is shown in this video, Stichotricha are often found in colonies.

Re: My Zeiss microscope
@imkap: From the Zeiss perspective, this is a very good way to connect a camera through the photoport of a Photomicroscope, Universal or other Zeiss scope with the appropriate diameter phototube. Other possibilities are shown in chart in my post. The nice thing about this setup is that you can adjus...

Re: My Zeiss microscope
I was able to upgrade the photomicrographic setup of my microscope, based on useful information provided to me by a member of this forum (Wes). I had a part that I knew was used for photomicrography but I didn’t know how. It had some kind of lens in it, and this part is shown in the photo below. I p...

The peritrich Scyphidia
I collect often from a small pond that has an abundance of an interesting peritrich, Scyphidia . It took me a while to figure out who Scyphidia was and have been delighted to find it repeatedly. This peritrich has a very short, non-contractile stalk and a deep buccal cavity, as shown in the first tw...

Zeiss condenser question
I have a simple question about a Zeiss phase contrast/DIC condenser. I would like to clean the underside of the 0.63 condenser lens. There are 3 screws that attach this lens to a flange (see arrow in photo below) which holds it above the rotating turret of the condenser. If I remove this lens by loo...

This is a peritrich, a type of ciliate on a stalk. The stalk can be contractile or not. This could be a species of Vorticella.

Wes, this was not very sophisticated. I removed a bit of algae and detritus from my collection jar, put it on a slide, added a coverslip and started scanning (this is what I usually do). Then I hope something interesting and photogenic will show up!

The naked freshwater forminiferan Reticulomyxa
This was one of the most interesting observations that I have made in quite a while. When I was examining a sample from a local pond, I noticed what appeared to be a network of fine branches. Upon closer examination, these turned out to be a network of anastomosing pseudopodia of the naked freshwate...

Re: Various Desmidiaceae collected in a moor
Beautiful photos, Jochen! Desmids are such a diverse group, with many different morphologies. I always enjoy finding them! The Hyalotheca that I find in my local pond here in North Carolina have many pores in the mucoid layer surrounding the cells on the filamentous desmid. Do you see these in your ...

Re: Question about a Zeiss part
Hi Wes, I have another question. Did you parfocalize the sensor on your camera with what you see in the eyepieces? I know that the large phototube can be twisted and thus move the phototube up or down for this purpose. I am also curious whether the tube that fits over it (47 60 05) with the knurled ...

Re: Question about a Zeiss part
Hi Wes,
Thanks very much for your very helpful reply! You noted that an eyepiece is still needed. What do you recommend/use in your setup? BTW, I have 2 of the 3 things you need for the configuration you show; I am missing the middle one.
Thanks,
Tim

Re: Question about a Zeiss part
Hi blekenbleu,
Thanks for your response. Sorry I wasn't clear that I did know as well that the mount was for an Olympus OM camera. I ordered one for the Canon camera so I can check it out. I thought of the suggestion you had for testing if it is a relay lens so I will give that a try.

Question about a Zeiss part
I have had the following Zeiss part, catalog number 47 60 29, for a while and have wondered how it is used (picture 1). I know that is for attaching a camera to a microscope and that the camera is attached to one end using the removable flange that is threaded on one end with the appropriate camera ...

Hi Wes, Thanks for your comment on the pictures! This is the peritrich ciliate Scyphidia. It has a short stalk attached to a filament of the alga Oedogonium. Sometimes, members of this genus are found as ectoparasites on other creatures like fish.
