I do appreciate your replies.
I’ll definitely try using the focus adjust knobs.

For context, I got this microtome (see picture) without any documentation to what numbers meant. It works great on making equally thin sections, but I would like to verify the thickness.

You are welcome!
Indeed, this is very useful.
I really liked the glycerine glue (GG) medium. I am just wondering if I should only use freshly prepared GG, instead of making a huge stock.
I observed huge bubble formation after weeks of drying my slides.

[Hand microtome] Have you tried razor scraper?
I’m just wondering if you tried to use a razor blade scraper in making hand sectioned specimens. A razor blade scraper is primarily used for window cleaning and car detailing. I feel like is is great for hand sectioning since it is used with horizontal force and displacement. Also, the single edge b...

Nice comments!
You could start with your own paintings! And see how the paints come together.
I guess it will work best on oil painting.

Re: How to anesthetize Drosophila? Homemade
Hi guys! I was wondering if you have any idea of using mothballs/naphthalene ball in "anesthetizing" fruit files. AFAIK: Naphthalene and chlorinated chemicals in mothballs are toxic and carcinogens. I thought they were all phased out. However, and irrespective of that, for putting flies into sleep,...

I saw <20 USD worth of objective lens (made in China). I was wondering if you had tried any of them? What are your thoughts? Also, in general, what do you consider in choosing/buying a new objective lens. (I am using Olypus CX 23, and I want to buy 20x or 60x objectives. :D ) Stay safa, happy viewin...

Re: Really cheap camera, any opinion?
I started with a similar camera still images were just fine. When I used to make motion videos, I found the videos were very jerky. Those eyepiece cameras are very easy to use. You will make a lot of great pictures. I use mine to view through the mIcroscope. I never use the eyepiece. I can't wait t...

Re: Really cheap camera, any opinion?
I don't think the usb cameras are ever worth the money. Smartphone camera pictures will work better anyway. Makes more sense to just put the $50 towards a dslr. Thanks for the comment. I've been using a smartphone camera. It just sucks in alignment and for taking videos. Some "adaptor" to place the...

Re: How to anesthetize Drosophila? Homemade
It can be safely and easily prepared from a little vinegar and some baking soda, Nice idea. I'm not just sure how to collect C02 and put it in the jar (without them escaping). A brief look into the literature shows that CO2 should indeed do the job. Although side effects are possible, depending on ...
