Suctoria??

Hello all! I've found these strange protrusions in a little piece of surface detritus... they look like suctorian spikes, but no suctorians to be seen? They moved slightly, which is rather unusual for a suctorian. Any help or direction is greatly appreciated!! https://youtu.be/MbIV2Exowgk?t=13 ~ Ten...

Re: Stentor ???

Amazing videos! I've seen these little guys before, but I was unable to identify them :( Internet pics don't help a lot either, but my guess would be S. roeselii. Take this with a pinch of salt, as I couldn't see the boys' macronucleus and I'm a little rusty at this <:)

Hope this helps,

Lettuce organism

Hey y'all! After a long while away from the microscope, I am back in action! I was looking through a freshwater sample and found this strange little man. At first I thought he was a very deformed Paramecium caudatum, but he's too flat. My next guess would be a worm, but he does not move like one. My...

A list of all peritrich species would be hard to find, though you could always skim through Wikipedia for information. Here's what I found: Subclass Peritrichia . Order Sessilida ... Family Ellobiophryidae ... family Epistylididae ... Family Lagenophryidae ... Family Operculariidae ... Family Rovinj...

Re: A Flatworm(Rhabdocoela)

Super uneducated guess here, as I am in no way a flatworm expert, but maybe Microstomum sp.? This worm looks a lot like Microstomum caudatum, but I couldn't find any videos of it moving, as it seems to do so very peculiarly and would certainly help in identification. I hope this sets you on the righ...

Peritrich ciliate colony

Hello everyone! Yesterday I went to a little pond and collected some water, detritus and Biomphalaria sp. + Physa sp. snails (both perfectly legal to keep in my country). On the back of one of the Physa snails, I found a huge colony of some sort of peritrich ciliate. Maybe Vorticella sp., but I can'...

Unidentified flagellate

Hello everyone! I was looking through this freshwater sample and found my first flagellate!! This is really exciting for me, as I've always wanted to see them, but I have no idea how to identify it. Luckily I recorded plenty of footage so if any flagellate connoisseurs could pitch in and tell me wha...

Re: Tiny snail in water sample from river

Interesting picture! Looks like a baby apple snail. If you have a brighter picture, I'd like to see it. They come in many colors but as far as I'm concerned, they're mostly the same species (Pomacea bridgesii). You might also find them as mystery snail or inca snail. Hope this helps!

Hello everyone! I finally got ahead of schoolwork and had some time to look at my cultures! Hi Greg!

For your soup, I'd suggest throwing in oxygen-rich foods such as broccolis and spinach to keep bacterial growth at a reasonable level.

I'd never heard of anyone putting egg shells in their cultures... would love to see some pictures of the friends you find!

Re: How to stop bacteria growth in jar of pond water?

I don't know what exactly causes or helps with bacteria growth, but I do know that since bacteria multiply much faster than protists, what usually happens is that they deplete the oxygen in your cultures. It's good to have bacteria, as they will serve as food for your protist friends, but if you let...

Re: Am I being overly sensitive?

Hi there! I've had this problem before, but not with insects... when it comes to microbes, they're tiny, so they don't really care and I usually just put them back in the culture so to them it was just a really weird earthquake or something. Insects and insect larvae are a problem though. They're bi...

Hi! Sorry about the vague questions in my last response, I didn't know what helminths were ^_^; However, I did come across this term, Acanthocephala, which are a phylum of worms called thorny headed worms. The "thorns" are hardly visible through the naked eye or even a camera such as the one you use...

Yes, a Stentor. This one has a single macronuclear nodule, and a reddish pigmentation, so possibly Stentor igneus.
Thank you so much, Bruce!!

I've wanted to see a Stentor for so long, the last time I saw them they all died :(

I'll be sure to take good care of them this time!!

HI there! I'm still fairly new to the hobby so don't expect any precise answers from me but, can you give me a little more context?
