Re: DIY lamp house

When you take the trouble to build a new illuminator I would suggest an LED of 10W or more. They need a good heat sink - how are your metal working capabilities? For power supply you can use a cheap lab power supply which offers constant current and clean DC voltage. I like the Cree XHP 35 and 50 L...

Re: DIY lamp house

The LED approach is starting to look more difficult without an electrical degree :( What would I need in order to power my current setup? From what I've seen on Fleabay the power supply that are listed are for a high pressure mercury lamp. The T4 12v100w bulb that came with the unit had that weird j...

DIY lamp house

Hello everyone, I have this lamp house that requires a power supply or I could modify it with an LED. The problem is that I have no knowledge in regards to electrical components and so I was wondering of anyone had already modified one of this lamps in the past? Or will it be easier to just get a po...

Leitz Laborlux K

Hi y'all, I recently purchased a Laborlux K with the fluorescent attachment, however is missing the lamp power source. Looking at ebay I haven't been able to find one; is this something that can be adapted from another lamp light source.? Also the objectives are labeled PHACO, looking through them I...

Re: Hydra viridissima gets decimated.

Yes it was using a stereo similar to this one https://www.amscope.com/8x-50x-track-stand-stereo-zoom-confocal-trinocular-microscope-w-top-bottom-led-lights.html which works out perfect for larger samples like Hydras, but any little vibration will cause the water sample to vibrate. For the longest ti...

Re: Hydra viridissima gets decimated.

Great videos! Some flatworms are known to feed on hydras. They even integrate the cnidoblast of the hydras and use them - probably - as a defense for themselves. The flatworm may be Stenostomum unicolor , but it is not possible to be sure with a video in darkfield only. Thanks for sharing. Thank yo...

Hydra viridissima

About 4 weeks ago I found a small Hydra , being the first one I've ever found it instantly captivated my attention, and I haven't been able to take my eyes and my camera off of it :D Every so often I move it from one petri dish to another, where there are different sources of food, from small Crusta...

Re: Adapting a Cellphone for magnifying specimens

My humble advise is to purchase a stereo microscope, a member posted the link to a starter, but descent one for $58 usd. The image quality will be a lot better, additionally it has it own light source or one can be added for under $20. The majority ( not all ) of those "turn your phone into a Micros...

Afocal adaptor

Looking for some diy ideas on how to go about fixing Eyepieces to an E-mount adaptor, something that can clamp onto the eyepiece collar for afocal photography. I have the mount for a sony NEX that was purchased from newhoper, but the intermediate optics provided do not provide any type of correction...

Re: Can a light source damage lens?

I'm honestly not quite sure what they are they might be some correction lenses, they are held in place by a spring clip. As I mentioned before after removing them I've noticed that I have to focus down a bit more when compared to when they were in place. If it is a ring spring or a spring clip, the...

Re: Can a light source damage lens?

Here's a thought. Placing a single polarizing sheet in place of the damaged lens will change the focal length ( maybe for the better) and will reduce the amount of light presented to the eye. Awesome im going to pursue this route, that way i can also add a polarizer below the sample plate, do you k...

Re: Can a light source damage lens?

Hi, some thoughts: - is it a lens? Look through it, does it affect the view? - Could it be a sandwiched filter? - If it is not a lens but just a protective glass - can you just replace it? - Is it possible that the decay was already there, and you just see it now with the stronger lamp? UV light ca...

Re: Can a light source damage lens?

[quote=PeteM post_id=100941 time=1616649442 user_id=698 Pretty baffling that this appeared appeared just sitting for a week or so. Were the eyepieces out? The Eyepieces are only removed for recording a video, every once in a while. The issue started to get more noticeable after the new lamps were in...

Re: Can a light source damage lens?

So the scope is a stereo, fairly new, a copy of the olympus sx67 i believe. The highest mag on it is 75X with no barlow lens, the two lens in question really dont appear to make a difference in image quality, I tested the coating theory and the alcohol did not remove it however a very sharp razor at...

Re: Can a light source damage lens?

You refer to this as a lens. Does it have a non-plane surface or is there evidence of a cement layer? As I mentioned before after removing them I've noticed that I have to focus ...

Re: Can a light source damage lens?

Here's a better view of the lens. Whatever it is it's internal, nothing I do seems make a difference at all, even try polishing one of them knowing that there is no fix in it and it had no effect. I wonder what the purpose of the lens are.? The bottom one is the worst of the two, but as you can see ...

Ahhh. Yes it worked, still haven't gotten it to the way I'm expecting it to feel like. Pete mentioned using regular grease instead of damping, I'm going to try that as well. Thank you all. Imy guessing it's similar to this other rail design but the external screws ad the tension instead of manually ...

Ummm, worth taking a look at, will disassemble and report back. The mechanism is your standard rod with gear pinion, but I wonder if the tension washer is damaged.

Making it smoother

Wondering of anyone had a solution or tip on how to make the focus rail on a Stereo feel smoother?.This is a brand new stereo and the ball bearings are in mint condition, I added a generous amount of Nyogel 795 on the rails to see if it made a difference with damping , but no luck. I can't seem to f...
