Strange critter found in peat mining area

So my local youth club went out to a local moss a few weeks back and my mum was nice enough to bring back a sample of the water lying in one of the old trenches they dug peat out of for fuel hundereds of years ago. I wasn't expecting much life given the acidity of peat but on testing the water got a...

Re: First life found under a microscope

The above are terrible. Don't waste your time! I made up another slide this time from my Blakemere sample (few miles from Colemere). Sample was essentially the plastic outer bag of a sandbag used to shore up a fishing peg I took the sample from. I honestly didn't expect much given the plastic nature...

First life found under a microscope

So after going out this morning and collecting three samples from diffrent meres (shallow Lakes formed during the last ice age (very british term for them)). Today I took a small sample from colemere and stuck it under the scope and despite thinking there would be no life at all given the heavy rain...

Re: First pictures from a newbie

Thanks! I love the blue stains as well.

No not yet, I'm going out tomorrow to collect a few samples from my local river at various slow moving spots and also a few stillwater fishing spots I used to visit. So hopefully I'll find lots of life there.

I'll post them up either tomorrow or Sunday!

Re: Very interested in the microscopic world and back at college

Given your interest in photography, you'll likely want something with a trinocular head. As someone who also has an SLR, This is already hurting me. I bought the binocular version of my scope and a 5MP eyepiece camera and while it works.. it's nowhere close to what's achievable with even just an ip...

Hello from England

Hello to the Forum from rainy old England! First of all, the last time I even touched a microscope let alone looked in the eyepiece of one was probably 15-16 years ago when I was in school! However the intrigue of being able to see things that you normally can't in the world around you never left me...
