Re: Olympus WHK 10X-20L-H Maintenance

The textured plastic ring just pops off. Next, the metal shade with the white lettering on it needs to come off. It has some very fine pitched threads that have lock-tight on them, which are all the way up near where your eye goes. If the helical mechanism is even close to working, it will unscrew b...

Re: Olympus WHK 10X-20L-H Maintenance

The WHK 10X-20L-H and WHK 10X-20L are different. Removing the lens shade/hood from a WHK 10X-20L is easy, but I'm not sure how the lens shade/hood is supposed to come off of the WHK 10X-20L-H. It does not rotate like it does on the WHK 10X-20L.

Olympus WHK 10X-20L-H Maintenance

I have an Olympus WHK 10X-20L-H eyepiece. The lens shade/hood slides straight in and out on a track but nothing turns. I assume this eyepiece contains a helical mechanism, and it's just froze up due to old grease. Does anyone have any tips on how to take it apart without breaking it?

AO Spencer 1079 Parts?

I ended up with one of these. It looks fine from the outside, but it rattles. I'm not sure if I'm missing something. When you unscrew the back side, there is a black ring inside that unscrews. There's a black cone underneath. Nothing else appears to come out, and there are no optics in either the ba...

Re: Budget Friendly BH2 Video?

For the benefit of others that may find this post at some point in the future. I've produced the following renderings to demonstrate the approximate field-of-view one can expect. This is what one would expect to see with a superwide SWHK 26.5 eyepiece (shown for context.) 2 SWHK 26.5mm.png This is w...

Re: Budget Friendly BH2 Video?

I received enough parts to do a preliminary test with a NFK 3.3X LD photo eyepiece, a U-PMTVC adapter, a Fotodiox C-m4/3 adapter, and a borrowed Olympus OM-D E-M5 camera. My goals for this test were the following. Measure the image diameter projected onto the image sensor. See how closely the field-...

It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to check your Windows power settings to make sure something in there isn't nerfing your system.

Windows Settings -> System -> Power & Sleep -> Additional Power Settings -> Change plan settings

Re: Budget Friendly BH2 Video?

I've spent some time going over Alan Wood's stuff again. The field number quoted for a 2.5x photo eyepiece with a full frame image sensor is 17.3. Further down the page, the field number quoted for the 2.5x photo eyepiece (not relative to any particular sensor size) is 21.6. Since the 'real' field n...

Re: Budget Friendly BH2 Video?

I did infer the following formula from the table at the bottom of the Introduction section here . Used Image Sensor Diagonal Dimension / Photo Eyepiece Magnification = Field Number of Image Presented to Image Sensor For example, 21.64mm (micro four thirds image sensor diagonal) / 3.3x (NFK photo eye...

Re: Budget Friendly BH2 Video?

I only use the GH4 for video on the microscopes, so I have no experience with it's electronic shutter in the photography mode. The Panasonic Lumix GH4's sensor resolution is 4620 x 3474 and has a maximum image resolution of very close to that (4608 x 3456). The actual image sensor is 17.3mm x 13mm ...

Re: 3D Reconstruction?

Much of this is already been done in photo stacking software like PICOLAY. The localization in three dimensions is determined and you can get a surface map out of the program. I'm still collecting the prerequisite equipment necessarily to experiment with what PICOLAY, etc. can offer. There is 3D sc...

3D Reconstruction?

I have a reflected light microscope, and I've noticed that the working distance of up to about a 10X objective is easily enough to allow for significant variation in specimen surface topography with a narrow depth of focus. (e.g. rocks, crystals, circuit boards, jewelry, etc.) I imagine stereo micro...

Re: Budget Friendly BH2 Video?

I wrote up a brief guide here Thanks. Your write-up mentions a SLR and a [Canon] "EOS" adapter (presumably an EF mount). Are you using a full-frame or APS-C sensor, and what photo eyepiece are you using? I'm assuming that going with this approach discourages the use of a micro 4/3s camera because o...

Re: Budget Friendly BH2 Video?

Removal of the electronics, throwing away the Olympus film body and purchasing a 67>42mm adapter (Amazon) gives a nice solid mount for a camera with V-C-CV viewing selector in the body of the PM-10. I happen to have an unused PM-10AD in a box within arms reach. Would you be so kind as to explain ho...

Re: Budget Friendly BH2 Video?

Tom, you mentioned a magnification changer. I've considered getting one because of the built-in bertrand lens. (I also happen to have a phase condenser laying around.) My question now is if you find it necessary with the camera setup you recommended above? Does a magnification changer help solve som...

Re: Budget Friendly BH2 Video?

Since you say you are camera illiterate, you are probably not aware that digital sensor size is not the only variable in matching projection image size with the sensor. Nailed it! The fact that a camera with a full-frame sensor might only use the center most APS-C surface area of the sensor while i...

I have my 4/3 camera attached to the trinoc port with just a tube that has no optics. Nice phase objective, micro! I can see your solution being viable for others too. Re: Budget Friendly BH2 Video?

...adapter camera attachment prices vary $50-100? Additional optic possibly required depending on camera $50-100... I think the devil's in the details here. As per Alan Wood , the APS-C and 4/3 sensors are best matched to the NFK 1.67x photo eyepiece, which can go for as much as $1K USD. For that p...

Budget Friendly BH2 Video?

My sister and I have both recently obtained BH2s with trinocs. Hers is setup for transmitted light, and mine is setup for reflected light. She's just starting residency, and I still have a mortgage. We both can't afford expensive camera setups right now. We are interested in a budget friendly video ...
