vorticella, possibly.
Gekko's very nice video prompted me to show this clan .http://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&p=9548#p9548 I discovered them right at the end of a session in the corner of an almost dried out slide and eventually almost lost them but I think I have them. They contracted in u...

Re: Vorticella (video)
Gekko. I just photographed a colony of them the other day. I did not get video but there was a remarkable ,symmetrical circle of them, all anchored to the end of an algae strand. I just discovered them as the slide was drying out , so didn't get great pictures before I rehydrated them. I think I mig...

Re: Water v. Oil immersion
I did a little test about midway down this thread, http://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1182, covering as many condensers on a single stand as I could . I was impressed at just how good a dry .90 achromat can be, even when compared to an oiled 1.3 achromat. It is better ...

welcome , KInase. very good images. Were you using the phycoerythrin as a a fluorescence indicator, and found some contaminated by those bacteria?

interesting shot. mosquitoes are really bad here this year. we're surrounded by water and the fairly large amount of rain has allowed many temporary ponds and water holes to persist. i had read that malaria was a big threat during the building of the Rideau canal in the 1820's. I thought, that must ...

Re: 4x obj. comparison. Back by popular request (1)
There are a couple of things here, that make this test more an interpretive assessment rather than a critical assessment. Even though the test subject is uniform, such stained commercially prepared slides tend to obscure some microscope characteristics and enhance others and these can vary from opti...

Re: AO/Reichert 50X 0.80 and AO 50X 0.85 Objectives
The older Bausch&Lomb non-divisible objectives( with a single black ring) have a little circular relief cut into the top of the rear diaphragm plate, which is probably there to engage with the top flange on your long thin funnel stop, and center it. The newer ones( with a single red ring) do not hav...

Re: AO/Reichert 50X 0.80 and AO 50X 0.85 Objectives
I assumed you had some kind of pamphlet but it doesn't make any sense. The funnel marked with the part # 04109, looks identical to the one mounted in my 90X 1.3 apochromat......unless the dimensions are slightly different. Mine, doesn't work in any of the B&L divisibles , I have here but fits the ap...

I'm curious where this information comes from, Charles. Was there a note or pamphlet with the condenser? I own all of the Spencer oil immersion objectives, that were made between about 1905 and the end of production, with the exception of a couple. They only made 2, 97X objectives in that period, th...

I have one B & L funnel stop for a 50's 97X achromat and it looks different. I do have those two short ones, as well. The larger of the two, fits in the 90X N.A. 1.30, Apochromat; the little one, in the older objectives, made between the teens into the 30's. They had the lenses, all in a little unth...

Only concern would be the heat. I didn't notice anywhere , a mention of any heat resistance. Even if you have a guard filter, there will be a buildup of heat in the housing. There was someone on ebay U.K. selling. Gelatine heat resistant filters for theatre lights a while ago. They were quite inexpe...

All very excellent . Interesting, how the pol image gives the impression of a convoluted group of curves, rather than a group of distinct circles.

If I haven't a good cannister I usually cut reliefs in wine corks,so the objective front lens isn't touching anything but the barrel is snug in the relief. Bottom of objective on bottom of pill bottle, fitted cork on objective nose, cork cut to length ,so the top of pill bottle holds everything nicely...

Proximity to a 150w halogen is always pretty hot. Do you know what temperature the filter needs to be able to take? Have you considered , filtering at the other end ? Cutting a small piece of acetate or gelatin filter and fitting it into or just flush with the exit port of the cable? There are high ...

apochronaut, many thanks for the additional insight. I think a biofilm makes a lot of sense. Amazingly, there are more than one design of these! One would think, there are better things to put creative intellect to work on. All the ones I have delittered the landscape free of, seem to work well on one or more ocular tubes. The thickness of the tube, affects this, because the gap between the...

As an aside , Charles, Bausch & Lomb who pretty much commanded the the dark field market in North America with the 100watt Balplan, until Olympus eroded it in the 90's also had an oil 50x .80 ( planfluorite) but did not put an iris in it. The earlier 50x flat field fluorite they made, prior to the d...

One of the things that we have difficulty imaging with light microscopy , is bio-film or bio-slime. We see it's effects all the time however. This odd roughly rectangular collection of single and actively reproducing chlorophyll bearing cells could be embedded in some unseen matrix of their own crea...

The switch to painting objectives was one of those minor cost cutting moves, that seemed like a good idea at the time. The paint they used improved over time but it still wore off or was removed by reagents , even from the latest production objectives. The practice is now ubiquitous. I guess when yo...

You can usually find an AO 569 or 570 ( 3X stereo with 20-22mm field , depending on the eyepieces) for 150.00 or so on a stand, sometimes more if it is in mint or close to mint condition. A lot of the time people try to sell the pods without the stand for the same or more. I will keep a look out for...

Re: New microscope person from Berkeley, CA, USA
Both AO stereostars and B&L stereozooms had optional trinocular heads. A brief search for a time on ebay will usually come up with either a complete unit or the optional part. As with any full scale microscope company, AO and Bausch & Lomb had various models and these were not just variances in magn...

They look like they get along well, Kurt. The 120 is a great phase instrument. The dark field market in N.A. became the sole province of the Ba...
