Re: ultrasonic cleaning

I would have to question any system that states that if you leave it too long, it could damage the objective. What is too long and how does one determine if the objective is damageable? Could is a word that should be considered a problem. I know the discreet implications of should, better than could...

Re: Bausch & Lomb Galen II - Seeking Compatible Trinocular Head

Even past that Kyowa was copying the Olympus BH2 in broad strokes, and might have even used the same dovetail. I think 42mm is a sort of pseudo-standard and there might be a variety of heads that could fit (from olympus or other makers copying them). Or it might not--it would be a good idea to meas...

Re: Are these finity APO objectives worth buying?

No. There are a number of factors to consider. Since you have a microscope with an Olympus type 180mm reference focal length system, you will get best results from objectives designed for that system. An objective from another infinity system with a different focal length will provide an image but t...

Re: Are these finity APO objectives worth buying?

Each lens in an objective has a specific job to do on the way to achieving perfect correction for all aberrations in the final image. Up until about 1960, the glass formulii were limited enough that eyepieces always had to participate in achieving perfect correction and more often than not, differen...

Re: The Plan of Things

There is a belief that is held by some , that plan is not necessary for thick preparations. However , this although not completely dumb, does not account for certain aberrations. For in addition to planarity, a plan objective offers more clarity. Not only by focusing the edge with the axis but also ...

Re: Immersion Mediums in Hell.

If these silicon-based creatures had silicon eye-lenses, then they would only see in the infra-red, since silicon is essentially opaque in wavelengths shorter than say 1100nm. Then, silicon's refractive index at 1100nm is around 3.5. I wouldn't know what a good match would be, but it sure isn't air...

Re: Immersion Mediums in Hell.

My guess is, they would use very similar immersion oils like us. As carbon based life forms we use materials containing every element in the periodic systems. Why should a silicon based life form behave different? Probably wouldn't be but theoretical scenarios for potential environments range from ...

That looks like a 30mm thread. The A is supposed to mean fully corrected. Auskorrigiert, if I have it spelled correctly. The reference length is 250mm.

Re: Has anyone used Olympus Microscope Lens Si Apo 40/1.00F?

It is silicone immersion but if you can pull that off the image quality will be quite high with the following provisos. It is messy. I have not used that objective but there are some characteristics of the short barrel Olympus objectives that one would need to be aware of before considering using on...

Re: Bausch & Lomb Galen II - Seeking Compatible Trinocular Head

Beginning in the 1960's Bausch & Lomb evolved 2 streams of compound microscopes. Those made in Rochester that evolved out of their unique Flat Field optics program and a kind of tier 2 group based on imported microscopes. The imported biological ones had 160mm optics. The most common of the latter w...

Re: Replacement abbe condenser for Olympus CX-31

With both having a 30 watt halogen bulb, both would benefit from a little absorption of the longer wavelength part of the spectrum, so a blue filter is valuable for both. The 31 was more for student use so perhaps they just wanted to make it very straight forward. The 41 had several condenser option...

Re: Reichert Polyvar

Actually, the #2110 1.30 condenser isn't that similar to the Reichert 90/1.30 condenser because it was not really intended to be used dry, as the Polyvar condenser was at .90, or for phase for that matter. The 2110 was a moderately high N.A. strain free oil immersion achromat aplanat intended for DI...

Re: Reichert Polyvar

One further note about eyepieces. There are two versions of Polyvar 10X/24 eyepieces, a WPK 10X/24 and WP 10X/24. Presumably with the WP , they have removed the .4% compensation from the eyepiece and put it elsewhere. It looks like the WP were for the Polyvar 2 and as a 20mm f.o.v. version the Polyl...

Re: Probably the original patent for the Reichert Univar/Polyvar 100X Plan Apo

Probably. Titanium or Zirconium flint would have by then become the option and likely. BK 7 was ubiquitous but with a high refractive index, much like flint but lower dispersion it could only have been used as a direct replacement when a high degree of other juggling of the math occurred. Interestin...

The scans are all very helpfull to fill in the gaps. Since you have 5 - 40X objectives, I am hoping you have the 40X .70 Plan Fl Apo . Since your plan is to avoid the use of immersion with your students I have found it one of the most perfect objectives for general use. Despite having only a modest ...

I did a little further checking. Arthur Shoemaker had two patents for 10X .25 Plan 34mm parfocal objectives. They are surprisingly different but achieve very similar goals. One is no doubt the cat.# 1021 and the other maybe the later cat.# 1127. No fluorite glass in either but the 1021 at least nudg...

I'd prefer to see the thicker, inside part of those jaws fully over the condenser barrel. Can you put a metric ruler or scale across the i.d. of the sleeve and see what you get as well. Not the caliper, a scale or ruler using the 10 as zero because sometimes that first mm on tapes/rulers are not acc...

Olympus , for some reason went back to an older condenser sleeve mount for those microscopes. It's anyone's guess why but imo , the reason is pretty transparent. Their previous mount was 36.8mm. I was just trying to confirm if they used the same as previous or have they used another dimension. If yo...
