Re: Green diatom in the DIC technique.
Don't worry about getting the name wrong, it's no big deal, particularly for those new to the hobby. In fact, the most effective way of getting an ID on an unknown critter is to purposely call it by a wrong name - you'll get 20 people correcting it while being lucky to get 1 answer to "what is this?...

That's right, I also turn the wrong screws every once in a while - argh! Another good reason to get practiced and comfortable re-centering the stage (and condenser too!).

Re: Centering a Zeiss circular stage
Howdy Tim! I love the Zeiss rotating biological stage so much I've adapted a couple of them to my Oly BH-2s, and center them almost constantly since they need re-centering with objective changes. I've never used a reticle eyepiece or any other aid, just do it by eye. My method is to center a target ...

Thanks for that, MichaelG. I often wonder where on Earth Fan comes up with some of the things he comes up with?! And for that matter, I've often wondered how in the world Pete knows all the stuff he knows! You guys are amazing.

I always thought of desmids as on the short list of very prettiest things to see in our microscopes, and this species is one of the most interesting. AND one of the most difficult to get good images of, ask me how I know.

This thread really ought to be made a 'sticky', as Rod did a fantastic job of documenting his work and the result is a treasure trove for the beginning diatomist. And the world needs more diatomists.

Not cheating at all. Adding or subtracting pertinent information might be, but rubbing out needless distraction to better present the subject is OK. Says me, anyway.

Yes, it's lovely imagery, thanks for posting! Sessile loricate rotifers fascinate me to no end.
Looks like the side view of a little Cocconeis diatom just to the right of the lorica's foot, too.

Thanks all! Is one of the ciliates into cell division process? Javier, I haven't observed any of 'my' suctorians to be reproducing as of yet. If I'm guessing correctly, the feature you're asking about might be the circular shape I'll call a vacuole, although I'm really not the least bit certain what...

Suctorians
Here are a few images of some Tokophrya sp. suctorians I've run across recently. Such strange little monsters I don't often run across, but a recent freshwater sample has loads of them. In the following images they're in hunting mode, and you oughta see what happens when an errant ciliate comes bumb...

Re: My Zeiss microscope
Yep, I have and use the same USB pedal switch, and also consider it an indispensable "third arm". However, I dislike the design as I'm forever mashing on one of the molded "surrounds" and not firing the pedal. So I got another type with a fully exposed pedal, as seen in the picture below. But it's s...

Ha, I worked in a university lab that had a couple of those back in 2015, and I had the same reaction when I first laid eyes on them -- oh look Fischer-Price microscopes oh boy!! But yeah, they're very nice stereo scopes, if a bit silly looking. Thanks for the memories and the laugh!
