Plant debris (vascular bundle)
Hi, I have been looking at some composted plant material and most of the tissue has gone completely but I have noticed that the vascular bundles seem to be the most resistant. Here is one example cropped from a 20x view. The ground tissue has all gone and this is the fraying end of the vascular bund...

Nice shot CG.

Hi All, Here is a photo from another one of my antique J Lomax slides. This one is one of the slides where the reverse of the label has the company name. As such it is probably quite valuable but I think they are fascinating and beautiful so not for sale! The specimen I selected from this slide is ~...

Thanks Jim, Hi QCC, For normal petrological studies I would say yes, polarised light was the way to go. However in these coal ball sections it is the organic remains that are of interest rather than the mineral matrix. Have a look at this page: http://steurh.home.xs4all.nl/engcalst/ecalstam.html#coa...

Fossil plants - first photos with Canon DSLR and new microscope.
Hi All, Now that I know how to use my DSLR and trinocular microscope together I took some photos of a slide to see how it looked. Firstly the slide: J Lomax (1857-1934) was the son of a miner in Yorkshire in the 19th Century who saw plant fossils in the debris from the mines and started to look at t...

Re: Ostracods
Well they would do but the females often breed through parthenogenesis (ie they produce fertile eggs without needing fertilisation - like stick insects). In memory of my studies of ostracods many decades ago I keep a tank of them in the greenhouse under the bench. I must get some of that water under...

The first one particularly shows the 'scars' where the adductor muscles attach to pull the valves closed.

Re: Vintage bulb
Thanks CL,
I too like the look of those bulbs. They are not too expensive either (for something that will last for years).
Interesting technology: lots of little LEDs in a strip, coated in a fluorescent compound so it glows as a strip rather than little dots.
Cheers

3mm is probably too big for an ostracod fragment so "Shelly debris" is probably what I would have put it down as.
What was the suggestion on the other forum?

Re: Bee tongue
Thanks CE and Bill, It has a missing battery door (£5-10 on eBay) and the SD card protection switch was stuck on 'Protected' so it would not take photos with a card present. This would not have been an issue as it was going to stay on the mic and would have worked fine on Live View, just saving to t...

Hi everyone. I have just received my new Canon 1000D and it was a 'repairs' job off eBay. £10 on parts and some careful fiddling and it is now working! I have ordered a C Mount adapter 1x which is shown as having a M28 thread at the other end.
Any idea what adapter would link this to a Canon 1000D?

Yes Apochronaut,
You are also correct in that the 40x is marked as .66
The head does have a 48-50mm dovetail and a 24mm lens - what does that tell you about it?
Cheers,
Steve

Is the 40mm port a common size? Just wondering if there are generic tubes that will fit this or whether I either need to buy a OEM part or make one.

Hi Everyone, I'm not used to working with infinity objectives my trinocular has a top port like this: http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n71/stevestevephoto/microscope/75B28DD7-18AF-47C6-9819-853A8656A034.jpg It's a 40mm diameter dovetail with a 28mm diameter tube below it.
