Objective threads are RMS (standard). Just be sure to use 160mm tube length objectives, but infinity correct objectives on that scope. Ideally, you should also match brands of objective - eyepiece to match optical compensation.

Acetone would not work as well as mineral spirits, since most microscopy grease dissolves a lot better in mineral spirits.

Just use maybe two tiny drops of mineral spirits. It has never failed me so far (I have released many frozen microscope mechanisms that way).

Harry, good modern microscopy immersion oil does not dry. If yours seems too thick, then it might have the type B (thick) formulation. You can buy a vial of Cargille type A oil to try. The thinner type A oil should reduce the pressure of 100x NA 1.4 objective on cover slips.

Sometimes even gravity alone is enough to concentrate some ciliates. I would suggest maybe 200 rpm. In biology labs, we do no more than 800 rpm for eukaryotic cells.
