Re: Quick comparison - 2mp ToupCam vs 16mp Canon DSLR

A good thing to do would be to work out the microns pear pixel for either camera and each of your objectives. Also read up on nyquest sampling. (Correct sampeling) This exersize should give you some insight in what you are trying to compare. The bit range of the camera is also importend. DSLRs alow ...

Nice images gekko. I had a water sample some years ago in which they seemed to thrive mainly by consuming every thing in there environment.I found them fascinating to watch.

rnabholz nice images, BTW is your 70D on a stand separate from your microscope or attached to the microscope?
When I tried my new 70D last year the results where not good it vibrates in a way the 40D doesn't even in silent mode.

Thanks zzffnn, Rod,Vasselle, KurtM, billben74 for your kind remarks. 75RR yes it is brightfield exmarine thank you for your efforts in trying to ID the smaller specimen. I have also been trawling the NZ diatom data bases, but no success yet. I found quite a few large diatoms in this water sample. mo...

Pinnularia and a Achnanthidiun I think?

I found these two diatoms, a Pinnularia and a Achnanthidiun ( I may well be wrong) in the storm water pond in the park I live next to. The final image is a focus stack of ten images processed with combineZP. The background has been smoothed to remove distractions https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/mK...

Re: tissue sample

MicroInspector, what you are probably not appreciating (when I started out I didn't either) is how thin your specimens need to be. The cover slips we use are about 0.17mm thick. Specimens need to be at least ten times thinner then the cover slip to produce good images Your objectives will be correct...

Re: Vaginicola

Thank you all for the lively discussion, links, videos and analysis of my post, very much appreciated. It is a great way to learn. Unfortunately I didn't get a phase image of the Vaginicola fully extended, I was concentrating on the banding So I hope to find some more specimens in the water sample I...

Vaginicola

It is now mid winter in Auckland, New Zealand. Even though the weather has been very mild I was a bit disappointed with the lack of activity in the water sample I collected from a stream which runs through the park behind our house. I found Stentor in this stream earlier on in the year. However it w...

Thank you all for the feed back and kind remarks. As to the question "where they digitally enhanced?" No more then any image I take regardless of the subject. Image 3 is the most "manipulated" I removed the background to isolate the subject. For bright field I over expose 1 stop for Phase contrast I...

Stentor ?

Hi All, It has been a while but its good to be back! Some images of Stentor ( well that is what I think they are ) I found in the small stream feeding into the storm water pond located in a park just over the fence, where I live. The water quality is dodgy but I have found a number interesting speci...
