Re: A source for diatoms

Here I posted a picture of a dried out diatom in salt water: http://www.microbehunter.com/microscopy-forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8130&p=71279&hilit=diatom#p71279 I frequently take a microscope with me when I travel, but here I had to improvise a preparation method and the result was special but inter...

Bob is giving excellent advice. I can only add that a series of three short Youtube videos have inspired several of us to delve more into this fascinating subject.

Those videos helped a lot. :D

Re: A source for diatoms

Diatoms can be found in different places so why not start with something simple. When you scrape of the slime film on water plants you will usually find diatoms, and not too much dirt. Then you place some diatom slime on a cover slip, place the cover slip on a piece of flat stainless steel sheet me...

Re: A source for diatoms

Hi Steve, whether you will find complete diatom frustures or not varies from product to product. As this is no defined property of the product it may vary too. Generally you have to expect lots of broken bits and an intact diatom here and there. Especially the bigger diatoms will be broken most of ...

Is this kind of diatomaceous earth a good source for finding diatoms for mounting on slides? :?:

Re: Gunpowders

Cool. I have a similar stereo. One thing I can say is, make sure the base and scope are very heartily locked. If the base is not connected with a strong lock, the scope will move around for well over a second when changing the focus, before 'settling'. If you take a picture during this time, it wil...

Neat. The first image looks like sliced bagels :) Fun to take images of everyday objects. Either sliced bagels or sliced and cooked pineapple. :) That powder, the Trail Boss is mostly used for loading cowboy ammo, pushing a 250 grain lead projectile at around 950 fps. :D Small things you see all th...

Gunpowders

Besides playing around with microscopes, I also play around with guns and ammo. I hand load and reload all of my own centerfire cartridges, and I use different powders to do so. Here's some pictures of some of the powders I use. The GOEX ffffg black powder is not for reloading, I use it in the flash...

I have both an OMAX and an AmScope and I added a few extras to each, such as a 60x and a 20x objectives and different powered eyepieces, and a few other extras. :)

Re: More Pictures

It is a smaller area of the original image, you have not reduced the overall size of the original. I think Steve has reduced the image size as was suggested and it looks better at least to my bad eyes. I think what may be happening as that the lens associated with the 1.3 Mp camera has too much mag...

It is a smaller area of the original image, you have not reduced the overall size of the original. Though there is an optimum image size/fit for different screen sizes, each image also has an individual optimum size. mrsonchus metaphor "a bit like sitting too close to the TV" is very good. Nice pictures but as others have said a bit like sitting too close to the TV. Good details in the botanical sections - the woody-stem shows secondary growth similar to that seen in my earlier root sections, with rays in between the xylem vessels. The lily has the classic open 'net-like' air-contain...

Re: More Pictures

Agree with gekko, a size reduction is in order. By the way, what does "compensating for the depth of field" entail? I'll download to Tinypic with the next size smaller. :) I call compensating for the depth of field, is trying to find a happy medium with the thickness of the specimen and try to find...

I'm using AmScope cameras. I have a 5.0 mp and a 1.3 mp cameras. I've posted other pictures on here that came out a lot better, so I think it was me and not the camera or scope. :)

This picture came out real good.

Re: Paramecium

Sometimes I do a little refocus when I put the camera in, but I try to focus first. I think with this, I was trying to focus on the inside of the paramecium. I'm still learning with this, I wish I could of stayed with it through the years.
