Re: THE AMATEUR SCIENTIST ON CD-ROM - LATEST EDITION - On Sale!
I think the search engine might work under Windows, but I haven't been able to get it to work in Ubuntu Linux, although I can get the table-of-contents page and all the content pages to open in my browser (Firefox). You had better do an internet search on the subject to see if others have had any pr...

Re: THE AMATEUR SCIENTIST ON CD-ROM - LATEST EDITION - On Sale!
Yes, it's got all the priceless old Roger Hayward illustrations, and all the Amateur Scientist articles from 1928-2001 (if it's the same one I bought from Surplus Shed a few years ago.) Unfortunately, it is not a pdf file, but html made to come up in your browser; only a minor inconvenience, conside...

Re: Looking for Leica Wild M10 user/service manual
Yes, pdfs are just a series of jpegs. So, depending on how much jpg compression had been done on the original images, the final pdf will be large or smaller. It looks like your jpgs are perhaps 100% (uncompressed) scans. Just reduce them to, say 85% quality apiece and the aggregate MB will drop down...

Re: 60x-70x multiple objective comparison.
Great work; I love this kind of comparison. What strikes me right off the bat are the great differences in depths of field. It looks like you were focusing on the central axis structure, it's amazing how some images are much more 'plan' than others. It must have been somewhat tough to control for ho...

Re: decent 2x camera adapter - Imaging Apparatus company?
Apparently the AO relay lenses came in two versions, one, the 1067, with a plain snout that fit into the trinoc head port, and with only a Prontor shutter inside. The later version, the 1091, was basically the same, but also had a photocell fitting coming off the side of the snout (see the ebay pix)...

Here's one of the AO photo relay lenses which might work for you (chime in, anybody, & tell me if I'm correct or not):

Re: decent 2x camera adapter - Imaging Apparatus company?
If you have the AO 1043 trinoc head, then look for a 1067 2.8x to 5x zoom relay lens/shutter combo and make an adapter to attach it to your camera (remove the Prontor shutter, it will be useless). If you are sure all you need is 2x, take a look at this thing on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Microsco...

Re: chipped lense I think....
It looks like something is on the surface of the lens, making it wavy. Could it be a dried contaminant? Maybe someone tried to use it with immersion oil? Try cleaning it with a Q-tip with some acetone on it.

Re: Reichert Univar microscope operating manual (English-language version), v.1.1
Good tips, Apochronaut. I hadn't thought of researching patents. I had checked with Reichert Microscope Services (now at http://www.reichert.com/microscopes/) about a year ago, back when they sold parts and serviced microscopes; the guy who responded (Raymond Halbert), who worked for Ametek (Depew, ...

Reichert Univar Operating Manual, the latest version (v 1.2)
A few errors have been fixed, and an aesthetic enhancement has been made in the text portions having to do with the configuration steps (more in line with the original manual, bullets instead of hyphens.)

Re: Reichert Univar microscope operating manual (English-language version), v.1.1
Thanks, Apochronaut. Info about this microscope does seem to be extremely sparse. Perhaps someone from Austria who knows something about the Reichert company will chime in and educate all of us. It's too bad that the company absorptions and mergers (especially, in this case, the Leica Group formatio...

Re: Reichert Univar microscope operating manual (English-language version), v.1.1
Thanks, guys, glad to share. It was a ton of work, but I had no alternative, as I'm restoring one of the beasts. Apo, do you know the production years of the Univar? I'm guessing that it came out in 1973, and was maybe produced until 1978? I think that's near the time the Polyvar first came out, but...

Reichert Univar microscope operating manual (English-language version), v.1.1
Here is a link to the manual that I recently finished translating (with thanks to Google Translate for significant help) from the public-domain German-language version (1975 ed., off the internet). Minor edits for clarity: http://blueplanettechnics.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Reichert-Univar-Engl...

Re: Microscope companies and their mergers, etc
Yep, I'll obviously have to do a better distinction between the brand name, the company division, the holding company, etc. Somewhere I read that AO was used as the brand after 1961 (post-AO-Spencer?), then changed to Reichert in 1972, then to Reichert-Jung in 1986, then to Leica in 1990, but it can...

Thanks for your inputs. 75RR: Will do. I will put the legends on a separate page, and perhaps the charts also, e.g., one for Olympus, one for Zeiss, etc., ad infinitum. WOW! Microscope companies and their mergers, etc
I've been fascinated, but confused, by the history of the microscope industry over the last few decades. Scattered tidbits keep cropping up in this forum, primarily in the comments from a few very knowledgeable individuals (Apochronaut, this is all your fault). To help me put it all together, I've r...

Re: Tardigrade SEM photo
It can't be alive; the preparation protocols (that I used to use on single-celled organisms, at least) for SEM examination involved fixing, then dehydration (several steps in increasing % ethanol), then critical-point drying, then sputter-coating with a gold flash (to reflect the electron beam). Thi...

Re: could this be restored?
The film may well be ruined by the soak; mine was (the filter for the Wild M40). It came out looking very corrugated and was very weak, so I threw it out. But you may want to replace your film, anyway. Or not, if the polarization is still taking place, and it's just a cosmetic issue, being the polar...

Re: could this be restored?
I recently had the same issue with some polarizing filters on two microscopes I'm restoring (a Reichert Univar and a Wild-Heerbrugg M40). It is indeed delamination of the polarizing film between the two pieces of glass. Why they delaminate like this, I don't know; but you can get the things complete...
