Re: Binocular Head Issue

It is easy for heads to get misaligned without obvious signs or marks. It was probably dropped at some point or maybe even made a little wrong. I was able to get this realigned by taking a slide and inscribing a crosshair on it using a carbide point. There were no adjustments on the oculars, but th...

Binocular Head Issue

I have two scopes with binocular heads, one an AO and one a Swift. The Swift has a Siedentopf head where the interpupillary distance is changed by a center pivot like on standard field binoculars. The AO unit is changed in linear fashion on a dovetailed fixture. I have no problems getting a single i...

Re: Swift/Motic M2 Portable/Field microscope.

The ring had me slightly confused because of the way it was shown in the catalog page. See photo. I believe it is shown upside down. But because of the way the ring is made I think that it is used to hand-hold the petri dishes so you can move the dish under the scope for examination. There is a smal...

I ran across some of the original accessories for the M2 along with one I didn't know existed, a fixed base. I picked them up for a reasonable price and with one more purchase, I think I will have all the accessories offered for the M2. Picture of what I purchased:

Re: 40x doesn't show a clear image.

Some information about the microscope, the objectives and the samples would help to answer your question. Do you use cover slides? How thick they are? How are your samples embedded? Do you use immersion oil? The 100x is most probably an immersion design. The working distance of 40x and 100x objecti...

Its a training scope, the split head allows two people to view the same sample simultaneously. We have a few similar models kicking around our department from the 1960's (as curios, we don't use them any more). Versions with dual binocular heads were also made, and a few manufacturers still make du...

Re: And now. This year's ignoble prize in microscope design goes to....

The price and value depend on whether the instrument has been cleaned, adjusted and tested. You can get AO Sixty student microscopes by the dozens, really cheap on Ebay. Most of them are engraved with the institutions name/number somewhere on the unit. I got a couple of them and was able to mix-and...

Re: What is the magnification?

I don't know your setup, so don't know if these simple lens formulas will help: 1/Do + 1/Di = 1/f Do=distance of object from lens, Di=distance of image from lens, f = focal length of lens. Si/So = Di/Do Si=size of image, So=size of object With virtual images involved, it will require drawing the len...

SPI makes a series of reticles for their handheld comparators that can be put on your stage and are somewhat less expensive than a slide specifically made for a microscope. See the pdf file.

Try one of these lens "suckers" used for camera lens repair. The kit comes with very small suction cups, which are perfect for coverslip holding and positioning:

Re: Can these be saved?

Yes. Before I retired I re-coverslipped a couple hundred teaching slides I had made as a student and mounted with Permount. Soak in Xylene if you can. It's a lot faster than the citrus-based solvents. They work, they're just slower. Xylene should loosen the coverslip in a couple of days. Flood the ...

You might want to try a ham radio supply store. You need a minimum 10 amp supply, and many ham radio supplies are 20 - 30 amps at 12v. Many listed on ebay for less than $100.00 USD.

My old AO Sixty doesn't have a field diaphragm so I made a fixed hole diaphragm that slips over the light source and is dead-center to the source (I have a lathe, milling machine, etc. so not a big deal.) What anomalies can I expect with this objective in this scope? One beauty of infinity objectives is that tube length mismatch mostly affects magnification factor. With suitable high contrast rectilinear targets, chromatic, spherical and other aberrations may be evident, particularly in camera image...

With the exception of only a few early infinity corrected apochromats that I know of ( 10X .30, 43X .80 and 80X 1.30) the infinity corrected objectives have the catalogue # engraved on the objective barrel. They are rarely 3 numbers and normally 4 numbers. There were rarely serial #'s on the infini...
