Re: What Hypotrich is this?
Thank you. I'm sorry for my boldness, Bruce, I was too hasty in assuming that it could be Uroleptopsis . I didn't notice their habitat when seeing it in Kahl's book. All my samples are freshwater (for now). When I sample brackish or marine water I will mention it. Thanks again. We're seeing this guy...

What Hypotrich is this?
I have been unable to identify this organism after reviewing Kahl's books (several times). Perhaps Uroleptosis?

Re: Oxytricha or Stylonychia?
Giant masterworks from German scientists. Fortunately, you are so kind to struggle with so many references (many of them hard to find) and shed some light on us. Be Tetmemena or Sterkiella , this organism has had a busy time reproducting in the last days. Perhaps a teratogenic sustance is accumulati...

Re: Oxytricha or Stylonychia?
A thousand thanks, Bruce! I'll dive more deeply into my Kahl's, Kudo's and Foissner's texts to study the genuses you mentioned. I already wrote about the compression because of the coverslip, I am deeply sorry for that. I am trying to get another sample with some more of these critters in order to m...

Oxytricha or Stylonychia?
I know Hypotrychia is one if the most difficult ciliate group so I often have problems identifying these critters. In this case I have found these large specimens with two nuclei and very noticeable cirri. In this video you can see that they appear slightly compressed by the cover glass. The smalles...

Re: A pond not only teeming but boiling with life, and a new critter
Thank you, Dennis. I went back to the pond a couple of days ago but only had time to take a sample. As you can see in this video, the show goes on, although less spectacular than two weeks ago. h2ob7JD1J3A As far as I can see, in this party there are Paramecium (sort of) multimicronucleatum , Parame...

Re: A pond not only teeming but boiling with life, and a new critter
A very interesting and authoritative explanation, apochronaut. You mentioned some factors that I did not consider. I will do from now on. Unfortunately I have had to interrupt my observations in that area. I am eager to return to it and continue discovering its microwonders. As soon as I can do it, ...

Re: A pond not only teeming but boiling with life, and a new critter
Quite interesting that you mention Prorodon niveus, Bruce. This species is one of the critters I first identified in this blooming. Moreover, it has very clear features so I could identify it unmistakeablely even though I had never met it before. Here is a video: hO7Irv-cnjQ The funny thing is that ...

Re: A pond not only teeming but boiling with life, and a new critter
Thank you, PeteM and Dennis. You are right, PeteM. I think the point is depth (this is the shallowest part of the pond) and nutrients. Cows come to drink to this side and trample it, creating microhabitats in the hoofprints, with much or less water in them. In fact, you could chart a differential ma...

A pond not only teeming but boiling with life, and a new critter
In the last days I've been fascinated by my observations in ponds in Cáceres (Spain) countryside. Specifically, near the city, I have found a cattle pond (rather a puddle, because it will end up drying up in a few weeks) where I have witnessed an explosion of life that I had not observed before anyw...

Re: Strange (and big) ciliate
Thank you, Sure Squinsalot. The sample is from an almost seasonal pond (it shrinks a lot in summer) called "Charca (pond) del Conejero", near the historical city of Cáceres, Spain. In fact, the pond is a little reservoir dammed up to water the cattle. Since the system won't let me attach a KMZ file,...

Re: Strange (and big) ciliate
Thanks a lot for your help, WesPau. I have been suggested that it could be a Frontonia , a large Frontonia , ind...

Strange (and big) ciliate
Hello, I need some help about this microorganism.
As you can see, it is a large ciliate with slow movements. I've thought of Lembadion or some contracted form of Spirostomum, but I'm not sure.
Thank you very much for any help or advice.

Within the first seconds of the first video you can see (probably) a rotifer.
In the second video you can see a baby freshwater snail.
Congrats!

Re: Prorodon (?) or Hophryoglena (?) dividing
At first I did think of Ophryoglena, but it was impossible to me to see the 6-shaped mouth.
Also, I didn't know that this species reproduces in cysts. I have a lot to learn.
Thanks again, Bruce, and sorry for the poor quality of the video.

Prorodon (?) or Ophryoglena (?) dividing
I saw this critter, half divided, escaping from its reproductive cyst. This is why I think it could be Prorodon instead Ophryoglena. However, I can not see the typical "basket mouth".
Can anyone help me, please?
Thank you very much.

Brain-eating amoeba found?
These tiny microorganisms look like flagellated forms of the famous brain-eating amoeba Naegleria gruberi or its more "benevolent" sister Naegleria aquatilis . https://youtu.be/dVpzm4KSYPc In the same sample I found an amoeba with a long flagellum that I identified as Mastigamoeba sp. , although it ...

Anisonema with four flagella?
This organism closely resembles the flagellate Anisonema (an euglenophyte, a close relative of Euglena). https://youtu.be/ICXpsiFoYPw However, you can see that it has four flagella, two short ones and two long ones. Is it an abnormal case? Is it an individual of Anisonema in bipartition? In any case...

It seems so to me. Maybe a member of Rotaria or Philodina?
Anyway it is an interesting find. Any help about the teratological agent will be welcome.

Re: Another unknown ciliate
Thank you once more, Bruce! I have not ever read about this genus. Anyway, I am glad I got near to Kahl's opinión. :) Regards. It is a species of Phialina , in the family Lacrymariidae. Kahl placed members of that genus in Lacrymaria , but in the 80s Foissner revived Phialina for "neckless" lacrymar...
