Re: Switching out my ELWD condenser for a higher NA condenser
I would potentially worry about losing some light from the light source being much further above the condenser, but other than that, I cant see any reason you would encounter issues Thanks. I'm currently using a 100W halogen light source, hopefully this would provide enough light in this type of se...

Re: Switching out my ELWD condenser for a higher NA condenser
I would think even if factory solution does not exist (which is unlikely), it would not be difficult to adapt a high NA condenser and LED light source onto Diaphot. Does that condenser holder go low enough? With the hanging drop method (with upside-down cover slip - slide), you can have an 0.17mm s...

Switching out my ELWD condenser for a higher NA condenser
I have a Nikon TMD Diaphot with an ELWD 0.3 phase contrast condenser. From a physics/optics standpoint, is there any reason a higher NA condenser wouldn't work with this scope? I don't use petri dishes so I don't need the working distance. I'm wondering if there is a Nikon condenser with higher NA t...

Re: Microbe aquarium
I've had a 20L pondwater microorganism aquarium going for about a year now. I've probably posted a bit about it in my own thread here, but when I have some time I'll post images and descriptions of the adventure in this thread so it's consolidated.

Re: Inverted microscope viewing
I've just acquired a Leitz Diavert microscope and am just about to make slides appropriate for the viewing requirements. I intend cutting 12 mm holes in standard slides and gluing a cover slip in place. Has anyone done this? Is there anything I should beware of other than ensuring a good seal all r...

Very cool. I usually don't see so many together unless it's an attached colony (e.g. Sinantherina socialis).

Very nice video. It's always hard zoomed in like that to follow these quick ciliates, especially at the moment of separation.

Crystals from solution of B-Alanine, L-Glutamine, Vodka and Water
Here are a couple of crystal images from my latest chemical combination. B-Alanine and L-Glutamine were dissolved in Vodka and Water and allowed to dry without a coverslip on a slide. Image stacks using a 10X objective under polarized light, with a plastic wrapper used as a retarder. balg sep stack ...

Thank you all for the kind feedback! The stack was shot using a Sony A9 so the images were shot in a rapid series, but not video. The image is sort of hand stacked or stacked in batches. I decided what features I needed to include in the image (food, edge, surface texture, nuclei, food, pseudopods,...

Wow such an amazing image, thanks for sharing here. Did you stack this from video frames? I would assume so, since the Amoeba must have had some movement.

Re: DSLR as Microscope Camera
I use my DSLR a bit differently than you are imagining (I have a Nikon D750). I connect my DSLR to a computer monitor via the camera's HDMI out, and record directly on the camera's SD card. I share one monitor between my computer and camera, and while my monitor has multiple inputs you could achieve...

Re: Inverted scope
Useful for lower magnification ( up to 400X and maybe 600X) for thicker specimens. Pricey for advanced optical choices. Challenging for illumination techniques other than BF and potentially expensive. Unless you were heavily involved in thick aqueous samples a lot, probably not worth the outlay, un...

Interesting Stentor for ID
I found this Stentor in my pond water microorganism aquarium. The undulating rounded ridges along its side were something interesting to me. Is there any way to identify this? Also, at the beginning you'll see a piece of it separate as it gets wrapped around debris. Is this part of its reproduction ...

This is mine. Similar to yours I guess, but with a lever attachment that is used to turn it. Mine moves smoothly throughout its range.

My TMD has a lever, not a knob.
